Re: Coopers ST-C Cut & Chip Resistant

    Hey Buzz,

I don't have ST-C's but I couldn't let your first post go unanswered for so long . I think I've seen mixed reports on ST-C's on another forum (ExploreOz I think), so I've heard good and bad. But then I've read good and bad about most brands. I think the biggest issue with tyres on sharp rocky roads are pressures. Anything that's running high pressures will cut and chip out there. I saw an add for the ST-Cs that features the guy from Birdsville so they are probably pretty good. I will probably go BFGs or ST-Cs for my next set of tyres. Welcome to the forum.

Re: Coopers ST-C Cut & Chip Resistant

      Hi Stephen,
Thanks for getting back to us on the subject of the tyres, but more specifically Coopers ST-C's. I haven't been exposed to a great deal of 4WD (let alone heavy duty 4WDing) as majority of the members on this forum would have encountered, but I'm keen to learn. I guess what I'm after is a tyre that'll give us high mileage and be able to travel well on both highway and dirt roads, beaches and the odd 4WD track. I've had Coopers ATR's on my previous 4WD, which was a 93 4 Runner, they served us well around the Newcastle area (primarily beaches and dirt tracks). I then upgraded to an 08 GXL Turbo Diesel with the intent on going above and beyond what the good old 4 Runner had to offer. However, with the impending move up to Katherine I think a more robust approach to tyres is in order. After reading through coopers reviews, the ST-C's seem to offer something similar to the ATR's, yet with a gutsier edge when confronted with more challenging terrain.....
Not too sure if you’re able to answer this, on the coopers site there are 2 classes of tyres, Passenger and Light truck? What are the differences (if any) and would you be able to use the light truck tyres on an 08 Prado?

      Cheers

        Hi Buzz

Someone can probably provide a better description of passenger v Light truck construction but basically the LT has more layers / plys which in theory makes it able to handle harsher conditions.

I have 06 GXL and have been running ST's in LT since new and have just put 2 new fronts on after 135,000k. We have just moved back to QLD but spent 4 years living in and around the NSW and VIC High Country and traversed the majority of it with no tyre issues. In my job i am in orchards and on farm everyday and i have to admit i am a bit slack with rotations so i can't speak highly enough of their performance.

Not the ST-C that you where asking about but can't see them being any worse than the ST's.

I believe Roothy is running ST-Cs on Milo so check out the DVDs and see how they are going.

            Hi Will,
That's for the response and personal experience write up. After reading up on the ST's and ST-C's a little more, I believe that the ST's might be a better choice for me. So in response to your last sentance, you've been very helpful, thanks!
Since your running ST's in LT, are they more expensive than the standard tyres??

Re: Coopers ST-C Cut & Chip Resistant

Sorry in delay in getting back to you but have been off line for a couple of days.

When i put the 2 new fronts on i got hit $365 a tyre. This was a lot more than the original set that i put on. Having said that i have been told that you can get them cheaper (& i believe this) if you shop around. Circumstances meant that i basically bought the 2 to drive north from Vic without having to worry about them or having to buy when i got up here. Original price was around $300 which when averaged out over the number of km's is great.

That's great mileage, any idea what pressures you run in them?

                  Hey Will,
Just had an obvious question in regards to the difference between the standard passenger and the light truck construction tyres....how do you tell them apart? I guess what I'm looking for is any specific signs I can look for if I order LT's but they install standard passengers?

                  Cheers
