  • Lowest Tyre Pressure on Grandcraps

I'm heading off for the Callcup Hill Challenge sometime next week and in case I get into real trouble, what is the lowest tyre pressure you have run on prado's stock rims and stock tyres (grantrecks). Personally I've done 15psi with minimal steering but has anyone gone lower without any dramas?

I've got a 08 GXL with coopers on and i've run 13psi into 5 rocks and back (soft sand only) Just watch your speed and what your running over. Better off running 15 as you can use the 13psi as a last resort to get you out of trouble?

I've had them down to 8psi to get up Bornholm Beach Hill. Only use very low pressures for the minimum amount of time required and avoid sharp turns.
Prados generally handle Callcup Hill without any problems. Justo has even towed a Hilux up Callcup with his Prado.

Re: Lowest Tyre Pressure on Grandcraps

In a stock Grande, my son came down to rescue me from an incoming tide at Wooli Beach. On his way down he also became bogged and promptly reduced his pressures and escaped with no other assistance. After we were all high and dry I checked all the tyre pressures. Mine were at 18psi and I was prepared to drop them to 15psi had he not been in the area.

Then I checked his tyres... 10psi  . Now I realise I was the one being too cautious. The 10psi handled fine as he snatched me from my predicament and then we drove for about 30 minutes along the soft sand. In general, I would still only go as low as 10psi in an emergency and reinflate to a more reasonable pressure at the earliest opportunity.

If the predicament dictated, then I guess I would go lower again, but would also need to be prepared with a spare in case one tyre rolls off the rim.

good to know, the problem is mine's automatic so i can lock it in High 1st but that might not be enough grunt to get me over the hill. I had this problem before where i put the gear selector into 2nd (High) and half way up the hill it would reduce the gear back to 1st and by that also reduce the momentum. Is there a way to lock the automatic gearbox into 2nd without it reducing it to the 1st?

mine is a 08 GXL auto diesel, above my left knee is a push button that says 2nd start. This button from my understanding doesn't let the auto down shift into 1st, for sand driving Works a treat, 13psi in tyres and 2nd start button pushed in the auto.

10 is fine for modern safety rims.

One minor problem is that a lot of tyre guages will not read very accurately at or below 10psi. So you could end up with less than 10psi. I have a variety of guages but I have one digital guage that is specifically designed to read accurately from 0psi and works great for the poly air bags too.

well I'm happy to say the prado did me proud this weekend. We completed the full loop (yeagarup dunes, cross the Warren and over the Callcup hill) with absolutely no problems. Climbed over Callcup with 11psi tyres and on the first go. Mind you the sand was bit wet. Also a guy in a Navara got stuck at the Warren crossing...took some guts to try a different spot but i made it

If the going is that hard go low range and drive, i used this successfully when pulling a camper trailer through the soft sand on fraser, everywhere else, high range.

Re: Lowest Tyre Pressure on Grandcraps

I suppose it is the situation. I have gone as low as 10 on grand trecks when i got stuck at stockton by myself. If i was below the high tide mark and the water was coming in i would do to zero and ride the tyres off the rim if it meant not loosing my car.

For most beach driving both on coopers and grandtrecks i always bypass 18 and go straight to 15 they seem to float better
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

i got stuck on beach a while ago, dropped pressure, dropped again and when finally dropped enough to get out without too much problem, tyres were at 10psi ... no problems.
