  • Howto break tyre bead

After the weekends excursion, I must have mud or a small stone or whatever between the tyre and the wheel, as I have a slow leak. Laying the wheel down, at road pressures I have bubbles at the bead line in one spot if I apply a little bit of water to the rim. It stops at around 20PSI

I can take it to a tyre place of course, but what is the quickest and easiest method (if they're one and the same) to break the bead, clean the surface and re-inflate by myself?

    Cheers,

    Dave

        Re: Howto break tyre bead

Ok fixed my version of the problem.

There were some small rocks in between the rim and tyre, before the bead, but putting enough preasure on the bead to
leak. My definition of a small rock is about 2-3mm across.

        0. Remove tyre
        1. Deflated the tyre to 0 psi by removed the valve (ARB defaltor).
        2. Lean on the tyre with 1 hand and vacuum with the other, clearing the small rocks and dirt. (easily visible)
        3. Inflate, repeat if required. ( I needed 2 goes at it )
        4. Be happy about not having to take time of work to go to a tyre place.

Yep, sorted in almost the same manner.

I put the tyre under the towbar tongue and used the jack to push down. Only put enough pressure on it to expose the dirt, which I blew out with the compressor. Reinflated, deflated, repeat air application. Has held pressure overnight so all looks good.

I'm impressed! That was very industrious guys.

I'll remember these tips for the future bush-driving adventures.

                Re: Howto break tyre bead

Remember to pack a 12v vacuum before yopur next big adventure.

I recently did a trye repair day with my 4WD club. Found the R&R Beadbreaker was pretty good along with a decsent set of tyre arms. Tyre pliers worked well as well but better suited to tyres that are taken on and off rims on a regular basis. One of the best tips I picked up was to use a reasonably thick soapy solution to help lubricate the bead and to assist with the seal for when inflating the tyre.

                  Re: Howto break tyre bead

Hi guys, here is my version of a bead breaker that i made a few years ago. i have never had to use it other than the test run after i made it (never had a flatty) but it works ok, although it is a bit slow as you need to keep going up and down and spinning the tyre a few times until the bead breaks.

this bolts to the OE jack

then place the tyre under the tow hitch (or anything else convenient) and wind the jack up.

                  Cheers Andrew

                        Re: Howto break tyre bead

Just a question does the old method of putting the wheel on its side and running the car up on the bead not work with new rims and tyres thus negating the need for a beadbreaker tool??
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Chester, if the tyre has been on the rim for twelve months (rough figure) or more then the bead seal is almost as stong as a weld and is really hard to remove. You can also cause damage to your veh\icle if you do this and the tyre flips up. Easiest is to your either R&R or Tyre Pliers but I think that R&R is more esier and can cause less damage to your fingers if you do it wrong.
