  • Second Spare Options

Guys i am looking for a second spare ATM to throw on the roof and there seems to be a number of options

1 another mag wheel now there seems to be some knock off speedy ones on ebay but the are only 17 x 7 inch where i think the origional is 17 x 7.5 will they a) fit and b) do the still take a standard 265/65/17 tyre

2 As above in steel but once again does the half inch difference in width make a difference??

3 I have also seen a lot of skinny GX wheels with a tyre or 2 and thought these maybe the go for a weight reduction as i do worry how the hell im going to wrestle it on the roof. Does it matter that it is a different width as long as the diameter is the same. I am assuming stud pattern etc will be the same.

I also believe if i buy a steel rim i will have to get some different wheel nuts is this correct

    Thanks for any help

    Chester,

Nov. '06 onwards 120 GX steel wheels are 17 X 7.5 and only about $135 new from Toyota (you would also need 6 tapered wheel studs). If you are worried about the weight of the steel wheel and getting it on the roof, then put the steel spare on the rear door and the alloy on the roof.

I'm pretty sure the Speedy Grande is the same size as the genuine alloys in the 17 x 7.5. They also need tappered nuts. When the Speedy grandes first came out they where available in both flat and tappered but now only in tappered. The Speedy Grandes are going for just over $200.

Thanks leachy one more question the standard mag will have a LT construction tyre on it and the Steel spare will have one of my old passanger construction ATR's on it with that in mind is any weight saving negated between steel and alloy

I'm really have no idea which would be heavier between the steel wheel passenger tyre and alloy whe / LT tyre.

The Speedy knock offs (grandes) definately come in 17 x 7.5 with taper seat nuts, i have three for my camper trailer and a mate has a full set when he changes between BFG's and the Grandcraps.

              Hi chester
I have recently acquired a steel rim from Toyota, It has been fitted with a near new Dunlop that was removed to fit the Duelers.
My plan is to carry it on the rear door, while the alloy spare will be on the Rhino roof racks tray.
Thought I would do a dry run putting it up there and removing it from the tray.
My method was to latch the rear door open, then step up onto the bumper and go the clean and jerk placing it upon the tray.
              Bloody awkward but doable.
              Cheers Troy

                Re: Second Spare Options

Maybe a stupid question here but what are peoples thoughts on mixing rim types? As in having maybe three alloys and a steel rim (all same tyre/size). The posts above had me thinking would there be any balance or alignment issues or potential damage to the axel diff? My understanding is that the steel rims are a fair bit heavier than the alloys. I can only compare my alloy with MT ATZ4. I seem to recall that it weights about 40ish kgs. Scales are buggered at the moment so can't check but I was under the impression that steelies on Prado in 265/70R17 are typically around the 50kg mark. The alloy might be thicker but is lighter.
