  • How to confuse a tyre fitter

I got some BFG all terrains fitted last week and it was hilarious

This is what i asked them to do

    1 Fit 5 BF's to the vehicle
2 Mount the best looking cooper ATR that is currently on the vehicle to the speedy rim i ordered
3 Place speedy rim with cooper on it and remaining 4 coopers in the back of the car so i can take them with

    This is what i got
    4 BF's on the car
1 Spare wheel and BF against a wall and them asking why i dont drive with my spare ( i just pointed at it oooh was the response)
1 speedy grande rim in the car by itself ( they are still looking for the wheel nuts that came in the box)
5 x cooper ATR on the rubbish pile

It was funny cause it took me following them around the garage and pointing at what goes where to get it sorted, it then got hilarious as the manager thought i had good organisational skills and asked if i was interested in applying for the 2IC job they had going

In the end all sorted exept for the wheel nuts which have finally been reordered as they still cant find them
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

That all depends, Plenty of people that run them swear by them, but there are plenty that think they are over rated. I've never run them but from what ive seen and read the main problem seems to be that they "chip" easily. As for your trip on the birdsville track, any good AT tyre should serve you well as long as you run the correct pressure. IMO Half worn grandtreks at the correct pressure will give less trouble than the "best" new AT tyre at the wrong pressure. pressures vary depending on tyres, vehicle, wieght etc but as a guide drop about 10PSI from your normal road pressures, you could run the front a few pound less than the rear as there is less wieght on the front axle. lower pressures also make for a much more comfortable ride. I reckon every single person that i have stopped to help with a flatty in the outback was running 40psi plus.

              Cheers Andrew

Take Prado + 1 new BF Goodrich AT + 3tyres off camper trailer to tyre place.

Request to swap tyres from camper (white rims) to Prado (alloys) + fit new tyre to repace blown spare.

Quoted $20 per tyre change over and wheel balance.

                  Should off been about $160.

Result receive bill for $20 not wishing to rip anybody off asked if this was right young bloke says yep "$20 as quoted"
Tried to explain that was per tyre after 3rd attempt, payed $20 and leave shaking head.

No i found them not to be so bad at all they were my second set of coopers withno problems, except for the chipping after the oodnadatta track but it was more cosmetic than structural.

The only reason i went to BF is that for a round oz trip i am doing with a camper i wanted light truck but i also wanted to stick to origional sizing hense the reason for the change i was getting 70000 out of the coopers with no problems as said before re pressures to give you an idea i did the oodnadatta at 26psi 80kph speed and no punctures for the trip

i found that most tyre fitters arent the sharpest pencils in the pack, if ive got a slightly different than usual senario with a job i ask can i give you a hand, usually end up doing most of the work myself, at least you know the jobs done right

I had my car serviced and the guys asked if I knew I had different size wheel nets (couple of 22mm ones amongst the marjority of 19mm ones I think it was). So at some point and there's only 3 places that have had the wheels off (the original place I bought them, during a service while on a 1/2 lap trip, and the original Toyota service centre) and one of them has managed to mix them up. What astounds me is the wrench monkey would have had to change the socket on his tool (air I pressume!) to do it but didn't stop to think... "that can't be right!" Too bad if 'he' gets a flat and doesn't have a wheel brace to suit!!

Thats why i dont care if they are orgional or not i always carry one of those x braces that have the 4 sides. I also find them easier to use as you can pull up and push down as you curse the fitter that used the rattle gun on them ops:

I try not to carry any more items that only have one use than absolutely nescessary. I carry a Sidcrome socket set so not only can i undo the wheel nuts with it using the crack bar, it is also good for any other repairs.

                              Agree TOTALLY Chester/Andrew,

How many of you PP's are running around with trailers on? Bet your Toyota wheel brace will struggle with the 19mm Holden nuts ops:
