I have a bit of a rant to get off my chest about tyres, feel free to ignore it:
Ive always liked BFG ATs, but recently I have moved to mud tyres. I had Hankook MT RT03s on my 90 and ive got 33.5" Nitto Trail Grapplers on my FJ Cruiser.
A few things:
1) BFGs are, like all non-mud tyres, very close to completely useless in mud. I do like the lateral grip they offer due to the square shoulder.
2) My boss is running the AT2s on his truck. they have 40,000 on them. They are noticeably noisier than my Nittos despite being a 31" tyre.
3) the BFGs have appallingly bad grip on wet roads, especially when they are about half worn onwards.
The Hankook MTs are bloody unreal, and I would never run ATs again unless I moved to the middle of a sandy desert. The Hankook compound is very soft (58 duro) compared to the BFGs which are in the upper 60As (durometer) like most road legal 4x4 tyres. The Hankooks are better on every offroad surface than any AT, have amazing wet road grip (they screech on lockup on soaking wet bitumen), and they are significantly quieter than Nitto Grapplers, which are in turn quieter than BFG ATs,
To hell with outright "lifespan", i dont care if the tyres last 40k or 80k, as long as the prices reasonably reflect this. In case of Hankook, i paid $1100 for 5.
tl:dr some mud tyres cost less and are quieter than many ATs, better or as good performance all round.
