  • TYRE MUSTER

I thought it might be an idea to start a list of everyone's tyres, their impressions and any thoughts on what they might choose in the future.

The idea is to create a database in one place for users to see what everyone else is using, rather than trawling different threads.

So c'mon - throw your details in the ring.

    Drew.

Vehicle: 2005 120 Series with Toyota 17x7.5 steel rims
    Tyres: Cooper ATR 265/65R17

    Kilometres so far: 34,000km

    Impressions:

    Great tyres.

Good points: Very grippy on road. Reasonably quiet. Established brand name with warranty. Same rolling diameter as OEM tyres, so no changes to speedo accuracy or vehicle dynamics. Good performers off road, have managed to keep up with my mate's more agressive tyres on his 4Runner. Did a great job in the snow (see here).

Bad points: Not Light Truck construction (not sure what this means at the end of the day anyway). They have been a bit chopped up but not surprising given some of the tracks we've been on. Not the most aggressive tread pattern available.

Thoughts for replacement: I'm fairly happy overall with these tyres, their wear so far seems to indicate they should last about 60,000 to 80,000km. I might consider a set of Cooper STs for next time, but they aren't available in the exact same size yet. This might not be such a big issue as there are stacks of others out there with larger than standard tyres.

I'm looking forward to reading other PradoPointer's impressions.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

      Hi Drew

Mine are a set of Kelly Safari AWR 265/70/R17 113S

They were on it when I got it 2nd hand. Maybe 10K on them (but only guessing)- and the spare had never touched the ground.

      Cheers

OK, I'll go with the flow ...

Vehicle: 2003 120 Series with Toyota 17x7.5 alloy rims

Tyres: Kelly Safari AWR 265/70/R17 113S

Kilometres so far: 5,000 to 10,000 Km (guessing)

Impressions: Seem to be OK. I'm new to this game so I have nothing to compare them to. They're black, have big lumpy bits of tread, are mostly round and hold air

Good points: Quite grippy on dry road. They get a little bit of slip and movement in the wet ( ops: Oops, maybe I shouldn't mention RAIN with all these Eastern Staters on the forum ops: ) Reasonably quiet except when I slip into Commodore driving mode and fang it into a corner - they chirp and carry on a bit. Slightly taller than original equipment a give an error of maybe 1 or 2 km/hr.

Bad points: Get bogged in sand easily - then I let some air out and they go OK. Happy on gravel and really tame buddy bits - haven't tried them on Jeff's gnarly mud holes out the back of Harvey.

Thoughts for replacement: Team Piggy reckons the Safaris on his work vehicles get some great mileage (around 90,000 Km) so I won't have to think about replacements for a while yet. I still drool when I see pics of Coopers.

By the time I'm ready to replace them there should be hundreds of member's comments to help me.

          Cheers

Mind you the Safaris get noisy after 50-60,000...

As soon as the missus starts complaining I'll leave some Coopers pamphlets on the dash - then the Safari's noise and the high pitched whining will both go away

Me too want to share :P

                Vehichle:

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX Limited (Japan Domestic Market)

                Terrain:

Mostly On The Road (But in My country the road is very bad, mostly Rough [img]tarmac or gravel with a lot of bitumens and large pot Holes !!! yeah even in highway ! So driving at 150km/h on highway and still you must look very carefully on the road for big pot holes!!! i ever break a 16" rims on my previous vehicles, Lexus RX 300, cause i hit a pot holes when doing 200KM/H !!!)

                Tyres:

Pirelli Scorpion ATR 275/55/R20 about to change to same tyre but in 305/60/R20 still in shipment though :P

Compared to my original Tyre , Michelin Cross Terrain R17

                Good Points:

-Very nice grip on wet or dry road (very recommended for those who like to drive their 4x4 fast!
-Aggresive look of the tyre's thread
-very good cornering ,etc, i can confidently corner even at 100km/h+ even with stock suspensions!
(once i ever overtake an X5 in highway's bend!! speed at that time is about 170km/h but the car feel very stable , it ride like a sedan instead a wagon!!!)

                Bad Points:

-Slightly noisier than the stock Michelins
-Speedo error cause i overall diameter is incresead
-Ride a bit harsdher maybe cause i go up from 17" to 20"
that's why i'm upgradingto bigger tyres 305/60/R20 hopefully the ride can soften a little bit :P
                -quite expensive

I have no idea about the mileage though

i change it when odo is on 5000km
now my odo is 10.000km and the tyre still look as new

when the new size arrive , ill put these on my other wagon, Mitsubishi challenger :P

Vehicle: 2006 120 Series with Toyota 17x7.5 alloy rims

Tyres: Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 265/65R17 (std)

                  Kilometres so far: 16,000km

                  Impressions:
                  Absolute crap

                  Good points:
Same rolling diameter as OEM tyres
                  Hold the car off ground.
                  Round & Black!

                  Bad points:
                  Not Light Truck construction.
Squel like a piglett. (This point actually keeps my kids amused!)
                  No grip, wet or dry.

                  Thoughts for replacement:
Will probably get D694's. Still deciding if I get a set of steelies to go with them... actualy this has clarified the issue for me, the Grand craps can go and not be returned to the car! That will save me $450 buying steelies.

                  cheers, Nige

                    Very nicely put Nige.

I think that sums up the GrandCrap argument quite nicely.

Vehicle: 2000 95 Series GXL with Toyota 16x7 steel rims

Tyres: Cooper STT (10 ply rated version) 265/75R16 (30mm diameter larger than standard)

                      Kilometres so far: 50,000km

                      Impressions:
                      Great rugged touring tyre.

                      Good points:
                      - Larger than standard dia, for a bit of extra lift (no scrubbing with 2" suspension lift").
                      - Decent tread pattern for grip when off-road. (The aggressive tread pattern works very well on our WA ball-bearing gravel roads).
                      - Good tar road grip (not highway tyre grip, but good for an aggressive tread pattern tyre). Better than the BFG AT tyres that were on previously.
                      - Seem to be very stake resistant (judging by the stakes that friends have had, on the same trips I've been on, with a variety of other tyres).

                      Bad points:
                      - Heavy buggers. Lifting up a spare onto the door, let alone a second spare onto the roofrack takes quite some effort.
                      - Use more fuel getting them to roll (fuel consumption went up about 1litre / 100km with these on). Due to the heavy weight I'm sure.
                      - Getting noisier as they get more worn. Simple fix - Close the window.
                      - Have to air down more for the sand, to get the same lengthened footprint. (ie: to get same footprint as BFG AT's at 18psi, the STT's need to be at 16psi).
                      - Wear fairly quickly, but I'll still get 70,000km out of a set, of which about 30,000km of that will have been outback tracks.

                      Thoughts for replacement:
Simple - Another set of Cooper STT's

                        Tyres : Cooper ST 265/70R16

Great tyre, nealy due for a new set will probably go for the STT's and throw the old ST.s onto the camper trailer.
Was going to upsize to 265/75R16 but than cant use the campers tyres as spares.

                            Tyres: Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 265/65R17

                            Kilometres so far: 24,000km

                            Good points:
                            Great performer on road
Supreme ability to almost defy the laws of physics in the wet (on highway)
Great off road (only if you like taking that extra time to let the kids run around, while you're constantly stopping to change punctures...)
Cheap (but only if you buy them in the same quantities as Toyota Motor Corporation)

                            Bad points:
Zero ability off road (pretty much what the wife says about me though...)

                            Thoughts for replacement:
The field is wide open: Cooper, Procomp, D694, Pirelli P Zero (just checking whether you were paying attention on that last one).

They do come with serious knobs and sidewall protection!
