  • Spare Wheel Lock

Our second hand Prado does not have the hard spare wheel cover, which I'm happy with.

It does have the barrel type lock fitted to the spare wheel, but the outer chrome shell that the key fits in is missing.

I have a part number from Toyota 69059-60220 for the whole assembly including new key, for about $70.

I don't want the whole thing just the chrome bit and I want to use my existing key.

Has anyone been able to source the bit or can a generic Toyota one be rekeyed?

    Thanks

    Re: Spare Wheel Lock

I could be wrong, but I think they all operate with any key. If that is the case, then you will be fine, otherwise you might need to pay a visit to a locksmith to get it keyed to your key.

Have you tried chasing one down at the wreckers?

Definately keyed to suit the car key, I have 2, 1 on the Prado and 1 for the spare for the trailer (still to be built). I had thought about getting the trailer lock keyed to suit the car, but decided not to as I didn't want to give out my key if someone borrowed the trailer.
Would be surprised if a locksmith couldn't key them alike.

I don't know how good those locks are anyway. My boss had his spare knocked off when parkd in his driveway and he said they just smashed the lock with a hammer. I have a PVC coated wire rope lock thingy wrapped through the spokes and in behind the spare wheel carrier.

          I can confirm.

Stuck my key in the lock on Gwatts Prado last Flinders trip, where it promptly got stuck  ..... Had several anxious moments of wriggling to get it free

he said they just smashed the lock with a hammer
Heard a similar story from the guy who balances my tyres.... looking at the lock I'd say it's pretty believable.

Thanks guys I agree that they are not very strong and only provide limited protection.

I just like to have the car looking stock and at the moment I’ve just got the brass looking nut.

I saw Toyota and the kit they had came with a key which had a four digit tag on it, I suppose if I had half a day and a patient sales man we could go through his stock to see if one matches our key code.

If I can get a cheap one from the wreakers I'll see a locksmith and see what he can do.
