Sounds like you should have got an old GX with the all black bits.

          Re: powder coating 120 rims.

joey, if you don't mind me asking, what did they sting you per rim?

My 90 series steelies look a little tired and before I can afford to pick up a new set of black King steelies (upgrading to 16x8 with new rubber) I thought I might go the powder coating option as an interim thing.

The more I look at joeys silver rig, the more those black rims grow on me.... which is unfortunate because it just adds one more thing to my list and will mean I need 6 rims done, excluding the trailer. If I do the trailer thats 9 including trying to source 5 x 17 inch rims.
4 x on the ground (old syle ST Coopers.
2 x spares (ready for the Kaymar rear, includes bying 1 more plus st maxxs)
2 x on ground on trailer (currently 16 inch requiring buying 2 plus Cooper ST Maxxs)
1 x trailer spare (currently 16 inch requiring buying 1 plus st Maxxs)
                  '
This is not going to be a cheap exercise

I've still got these at home with my spare set of Mickey T MTZ's on them... I like the look with the different colour rim, but the style of rim doesn't appeal all that much to me...

                      Mitch

I prefer the 120 - Prado rim. I prefer some after markets more, but having to deal with 9 rims, the aftermarket scene is out of the question for me.

I'm hearing you... Hence the reason why these sit down the side of the house. I will be putting the MTZ's on the Camper Trailer Prado alloys though for the trip East next month.... That way we will have four spares if the worst happens

Anyone heard of Electroplating, or os that the same as powdercoating? I had a Bull bar done in black for my old 4Runner and it came up really nice. It was sandblasted first. Was thinking of doing the same to my rims.. but the mob that did my bar have shut shop I think.

For those that might be interested - with electroplating the item goes into a big chenical bath containing the material to be added to the item and they hit the whole thing with an electric current, causing the material to be deposited onto the "job".

Powdercoating involves spraying powdered paint onto the work surface with an electrostatic charge to make it stick and then its baked at a high tepmerature to melt the powder and make it flow together for a smooth finish.

Powdercoated items should not be considered "waterproof" as far as paint goes, its a decorative treatment like anything else. From what I've seen electoplating does create a way stronger surface material but its thinner than powercoating.. Happy to be corrected.

                              Cheers,

Tend to agree Fozzy. The bullbar I had electroplated held up to stone chips and scratches really well. Much better than the original powder coat that it came with. I'm seriously considering getting my rims electroplated black. I reckon it's a more economical option than paying big bucks for new rims.
