  • Mickey T MTZ's and fuel economy (Sorry not MTX's, I goofed)

    Hi all.

TP asked me a question Re. my Mickey T MTZ's and why it looks like I might have lost some fuel economy for the same size tyre as a result.

I was going to PM my answer to TP, but I though that others may have something to add, so I decided to through it out as a post.

TP, I hope you don’t mind...

    “Hi TP.

Re. your question about the MTZ’s. I love them.

I have put a couple of thousand K’s on them and they have quiet’nd down quite a bit. They are still noisier than my ATR’s but nothing horrendous. We did a day trip out to Morgan and I was very impressed with how they performed. I had them aired down to 22psi and even the hard-core Rover boys that I was there with said they were amazed at what I pointed the Prado at and how well it did. A lot of this was due to the tyres.

As far as the fuel figures go, the MTZ’s on steel rims are a lot heavier than my ATR’s on the Toyota alloys, but I think that the lug pattern and maybe the design of the side wall make the tyre sit flatter, more bulge??? than the ATR’s. I noticed straight away that they were harder to turn when I went to leave our driveway that has a very gentle slope up to the road and the engine did not pull the vehicle up as easy on idle as it used to when I let out the clutch with the ATR’s on. I also noticed that where the vehicle would normally need a little bit of brake to hold it when stopped at the lights it will now stay put (remember that I have a manual).

It looks like I “might” have lost half a litter per 100 but I will have to run them for a few fill cycles around town to confirm this.

As far as clearance goes, on my truck with 70 odd mm of lift in the front and the ARB bar, no worries.

Where are you in SA, we are up near Gawler and if you are concerned about clearance we could slap one of the MTZ’s on your truck and see how it looks? I could also take you for a run in mine if you wanted to hear them on the road.

    Cheers,

    Paul.”

    Cheers Paul.

I'm based 3kms south of the city, though travel for work reguarly thru your area.
I may take you up on your offer one weekend though.
Prob not for a month or more but, have a huge job to finish at Mt Barker before Opening of the new homemaker centre up there!

I have all the standard bars on still, havent decided on a big mods schedule yet as I might buy another to play with and let the wife keep the Grande.

I have a pretty good feeling the 70's wont fit with standard bars nor a lift.
Only one way to find out though! Thanks for the offer.

Who did you get the MT's thru? I know the fella down at lonsdale that carries them.

I'm wondering about friction issues causing drag, what pressure do you normally run the MT's at compared to your other tyres?

Have you thought about what you might buy ? Would this be a tourer or just a toy ? Would you get another Grande ?

As for the tyres ... I'm curious about a like-for-like comparison ... are the MTX's about the same weight as similar tyres (ie more capable off road tyres than the Grandtreks ?) ... and what percentage of the overall additional weight comes from the steel rims ? Are the alloys considered something that should really be changed - or are they okay for long distance touring (assuming you don't do too much of the really rough stuff) ?

Still trying to learn the ins-and-outs of tyres!

Hey guys i have the same tyre on the standard 17" rims...
70 series. I have yet to have any clearance issues with mine, and appart from the tires everything else is as tojo intended.

On the limited times i have had them off the tarmac, they have been a great tyre and have seemed to wear really well also.

Only issue i ran into was that the tyres were higher so they didnt fit on the spare wheel carrier properly. I had to make up some spacers for the bracked, approx 1", and some new hi-ten bolts.

After the other weekends wet weather, i doubt i will ever run another tyre on mine unless i get the money and the room to have another set of wheels and tyres for it.

As far as fuel economy goes though, i have not experienced any real markable difference from normal, and that is still based on it uses about the same amount of fuel as my 2 litre 4 Cyl Subaru.

Damien, are you running the standard bumpers and height (Eg no suspension mods?). Witha 70 series MTX?

Sim: Not sure, I had a look at a 100 series the other day with an existing 5 inch lift and 37's on it.
I like the features of the Grande, but would prob rip out the Airbags to allow a suspension lift to occur higher than the bags will allow.
If I could find a VX with leather & Satnav I would go that way.

I'm after a tourer more than a weapon.

Well done Paul. Like you, I had similar PMs and thought it a good idea to take them to the forum for everyone's benefit.

It's great to see members offering to help each other out.

Top work, PradoPoint Gold Star for you.

                  Oops.

I just realised that I goofed. I actually have MTZ's but for some dumb reason wrote MTX ops:

TP. I got my MTZ's through Chris at TyrePlus, Tea Tree Gully (08 8395 5880). He was very helpful and gave me an excellent price.

Thats actually good PCM as I was looking at the MTZ's not the more road orientated MTX. (Will be my second set of tyres).

                        Hello All,

While on the topic of Mickey Thompson I was at the tyre outlet today looking at the M/T ATZ in the 265/70/17 for a new VX T/D that I am waiting to take delivery of next month. I currently have a 90 serious T/D and used the original grand treks, then went to Cooper S/T which I had a good run and then decided to give the Goodyear Silent Armours a go.

I don’t feel the Silent Armours really suit the Prados as the Kevlar compound seems give the tyre a very stiff feel and seems to create a very thumpy feel, even at lower tyre pressures. When I had first put them on it took some getting used to, as the care seemed to wander more then with the Coopers.

The M/T ATZ look like a good A/T tyre and I would really like to get some feed back if anyone has a set or has heard seem feedback from others.

I do a lot of bitumen driving but also like to do some 4wd driving and have done 2 x major trips up north one through Oodnadatta, Tanami & Gibb River Rd etc and having a decent L/T tyre gives you a lot more confidence. It is a bit of a pity that the L/T is not really available in the 265/65 size as I did feel a difference when I had changed tyre diameter on the 90 series. Has it made much of a difference up hills whilst towing to those who have the 120 D4D that have upsized the tyres.

                          Hey Matt.

I think Chris quoted me $345 each for 265/70/17 MTZ's.

                          Paul.

Yeah that sounds about right from what i paid.

I got 5 when i got mine. Wasn't that cheap but convinced the wife it was necessary
You will have to make up some spacers for the spare wheel bracket as the new tires on the rim will not fit.

I machined some up at work using some aluminum round stock i pilfered from the physics dept.

I think from memory they are about an inch thick. You can get some longer high tensile bolts from supercheap as the original bolts just aren't long enough. i can post the dimensions of the ones i made if you like as i don't know of any commercially available spacers as yet.
