  • What's the latest opinion on Pirelli Scorpions V's BFG KO's

    Hi All
Just after an opinion on a few sets of tyres, will be getting rid of the Grandtreks and replacing with one of three brands. All prices are from Newcastle region stores, Bob Jane, Bridgestone and Beaurepaires. All based on 265/65 X17, have done a search some of the info is a couple of years old so I was just wondering if there are any differing opinions from these older posts!
    1. Pirelli Scorpion ATR Bob Jane $289 Fitted and balanced, Bridgestone $356 Fitted and Balanced

    2. BFG KO Bob Jane $320 Fitted and Balanced

    3. Bridgestone 684 $369 Fitted and Balanced Bridgestone.

Other options that the dealers suggested were:
    Hankook RA23 $220 F& B
    Cooper ATR $285 F&B
    Maxxis 771 $205 F&B

The vehicle is a fleet vehicle on novated lease, it spends the majority of time on the bitumen, some towing 2 tonne boat and trailer, during winter a bit of time down in the Snowy Ski Fields and some very light off road.

I have previously had Pirellis on the 90 series I had and the wear on them was not really what I had expected but have heard there has been a fair bit of development since! I have also had GT Radial Savero HT's on the 90 series which surprised me! So any experiences good or bad with the above mentioned tyres would be useful.
    Thanks in anticipation!

      Hi,

I see you have Bridgestones in your list.

I just had some Bridgestone 694's (Light Truck) 275/65/17 fitted for $287 at my local Jax tyres, they were a bit cheaper than the local Bob Jane. The passenger construction tyre was $282. Now i'm glad I spent the extra because the tread is deeper and I can't tell the difference in the ride although it is supposed to be harder with the LT tyre.

I have heavy springs with a 2 inch lift, so maybe that's why I can't feel any difference. They are a lot better road tyre than the originals (better steering response and quiet) and hope they will also be much better off road.

Re: What's the latest opinion on Pirelli Scorpions V's BFG KO's

Thanks Guys, as the car is with a fleet company, I have to use one of the three companies listed otherwise I have to pay upfront then claim it. Much easier to go to a dealer and they deal directly with fleet company
Samo, I have used Tyres and More previously and have been pretty happy! Generally I will use JAX due to family connections.
Are the LT's worth having when I don't do any serious off road work?
          Cheers

The two tyrs listyed r very different BFG, more suited to offroad work and r a light truck tyre, Pirelli more road orientated, the Bridgestone is in between and my personal choice, use someone like Jax to get the price down at one of the dealers u have to use.

Thanks Hutch, Will be using that card just have to wait for my Uncle to get back from Melbourne to give me a written quote!
I'm pretty happy with the quote on the Pirelli's anyway as I paid about $250 a tyre with discount on the 90 series around 7 years ago!
I believe the Scorpion ATR is a much improved tyre now than what it was then.

U r right about the Pirelli, they r a good bit of kit, I had them on my jeep, just didn't keep the car long enough to test the mileage. I like the Bridgie as it comes in light truck in the original size but unless u r doing some heavy towing or offroad work Light truck not really needed.

Decided on the Pirelli's, advice from my uncle was that these were the better tyre. He was involved in the testing in Dubai & reckons that the testing process that Pirelli goes through is awesome! He runs Pirellis on his 200 series LC and tows a 3 tonne Caravan and says that they are quiet, with fantastic grip. So will order on Monday and get them fitted next Saturday!

Let us know your impresions after you've done a few K's, John. The Pirelis are on my shortlist for when I need to replace my 694s, only trouble is I can't wear them out! The manager at the local Jax suggested I might try them next time.He was saying the grip's very good, and they are a little softer riding than the 694s, but certainly not a lesser tyre.

I will Travelman! I had some on the previous vehicle, a 90 series Grande, they were really quite and traction was great but they were a really soft rubber compound so they wore out pretty quickly. Apparently the new AT/R is a harder compound but doesn't lose out in the performance and handling stakes in any way!

Re: What's the latest opinion on Pirelli Scorpions V's BFG KO's

Well, I have done abot 500km on the Pirellis since Saturday and I must say that the noise level on the road surface is very quiet. The guys at Bob Jane have recommended 40psi all round for highway and around town and this has certainly not destroyed the comfort of the ride.
We have been having rain which has been mostly nuisance moisture so the roads are pretty slippery, the Pirellis are very sticky, whereas the Dunlops would have been making me nervous on some bends.
I changed the tyres at just on 50000k's and there was probably another 10000k's left in the Dunlops, the Bob Jane guys offered me a couple to keep as spares just in case but no room to store them so declined the offer. So far I'm pretty pleased with the choice, can recommend Bob Jane at Kotara for the Newcastle members they were very good to deal with.
I will post again as the tyres get a few more K's on them.
                        Cheers

Re: What's the latest opinion on Pirelli Scorpions V's BFG KO's

I've now done about 12000 KM's on my Pirelli Scorpion ATR's.

On Road = Brilliant. Almost silent (imo no added noise from stock Grandtreks). Great grip in all road conditions.
Off Road - I have used them on the beach and no dramas at all, and I have used them on very steep hard packed dirt tracks, and steep loose rock. The rock seemed to take it's toll. There's noticeable damage to the tread but nothing scary. I also had a gouge taken out of the side wall but it didn't puncture. It's kind of hard to tell where the tyres are good - and where the Traction control is good tho... The hill descent control does have to work hard when you're going down hill with the scorpions but don't really have a baseline to compare them against.

I am totally happy with them on road but kind of wish I'd gotten some LT as most of the off road I'll do (which isn't that much) will be lots of loose rock (i.e. Flinders ranges etc) and the sidewall damage kind of makes me a bit nervous.

Hard to gauge treadwear by sight - but it certainly isn't looking out of the range of normal to me.

The Pirelli is a brilliant tyre I just wish they made them in muddy and larger!! I have them on my prado 265/65 17 , and super happy wit them. I have anialated 1 of them. Have had these for 50,000kms and about half worn? Atleast 5,000km of this would be offroad (4wding every weekend with mates and even once or twice during the week) . And not just soft wheeling. I mean hardcore rock garden kinda stuff .. I run them about 15psi and have only rolled a bead once, and that was due to doing donuts in a mud pit for 30mins haha took the turns a little sharp for 15psi. On rocks they literally fold over the rock , I've had the side wall from the bottom of the tyre folding back up and touching the rim at 15psi and hvnt busted a sidewall or rolled a bead. Amazing grip on rock , better than muddies , I do constantly outperform my mates cars and they are all on muddies. Ive tried a set of my mates 285 bfg km2 to compare grip levels and muddies just don't scratch the surface of these ! I love muddies for the looks but for actual grip I wouldn't go past these. Pefect on road very quiet and even though I have thrashed the crap out of them they still balance and ride quiet. Sick tyre. I will be Buying these again as a dedicated road tyre and occasional soft offroaders tyre an have a seperate set of muddies for my rock crawling on the weekends, (for strenght and alot more clearence but I love these tyres I really do ..

I am very happy with my Pirelli Scorpions ATRs and have done about 30,000km with them so far and they are hardly showing any wear. As stated by others above, they are much better than the Dunlops in the wet; quiet on the road; great on sand and quite good in mud. There are obviously better mud tyres but they are a very good all round tyre for the price.
