We took our 6 week old ZR on Vic Widman's 4WD training course at Braidwood at the weekend, being complete newbies as our username suggests. It was great. With no modifications, the ZR did everything it was asked to - including crawling up and down Widman's toughest hill, Cooper Climb, apparently without effort. We've now done about 1500 ks on local dirt roads, fire trails and Vic's test courses - sand, river crossing, hill climb, dam, obstacles etc. - and couldn't be happier. Thoroughly enjoyed the training course, too! Now all we have to do is pick up the trailer and head off...

Great to hear the ZR performed well...... there are not alot around yet. I have not seen one yet.
Was Vic himself down at Braidwood last weekend?

Hi eagerlearners,
Great to hear there is another shorty in the ACT, I've had my SX for about the same amount of time and it is yet to let me down, even on Newcastle's softest beach (Redhead-Blacksmiths), I've nearly clocked over the 6000km mark with at least 2000k's on beach in mud or dirt tracks. I've even taken on the bog holes on the track out the back of Hume (no snorkel so bit scary when the headlights went under) but pulled through beautifully.
Mine is black so the scratches are starting to get to me a bit!
I'm interested in the Braidwood training course, could you tell me where it is?

Very interesting, on my way home from work this week (train and walk) I pulled up at the local conveneience store to grab some milk...out the front was a 3 door Prado.....and just as I walked up the driver got out so I said "mate interested to have a look if you don't mind as I have a 5 door GXL"...he said sure.....we got talking and I found out he was from Toyota, I gather the Queensland sales manager BUT not 100% certain on that...said hows the sales of the 3 door going......he fluffed around for a bit and then admited that they had sold bugger all.

I am glad to read people are happy with 3 door, I have just got mine & love driving it, gettn a lot of looks from many other 4wd owners.

I can’t recommend enough the 150 Series. Two weeks ago I took delivery of a white SWB SX Demo – incredible, fantastic, luxury, power and economy. I am in Cairns and the computer indicates 6.2l per hundred on the highway and 6.8l per hundred around town that’s with aircon on no less! I have driven up to Port Douglas and down to Mission Beach really eats the highway up – I traded a Daihatsu Terios which I bought new in 2004 for this SX so it is a big change for me. I have driven the SX in sand and no problem at all did not even need to let the tyres down just dropped in Low Range and it was effortless to get through quite deep sand.
Resale and depreciation were a concern however I did my research and being a Toyota Diesel is a big factor, plus the most interesting is the three tonne towing capacity of the SWB that being substantially more than the 5 door which is 2.5 tonne only.Also the diesel engine is really smooth and quiet at highway speeds.Comment

Hi Eagerlearners, did you guys change your stock tyres (I think Dunlop at20?) for something else before you did the 4wheel drive training course ? I am in the process of negotiating for an SX, and wondered if I should change the tyres to a more aggressive AT pattern (I do a bit of dirt off road and sand driving, but not sloppy wet mud, unless it rains when we are out there !). If you did your course in the stock tyres, looks like no need for me to change mine.

Hey Simonfish way to go if u do the deal I am sure u will be happy - you will be a step ahead with the SX version as it has better tyres in my view for off-roading as they are 17's not 18's like on the ZR also they are not as low profile rubber either.Try a quote for off-road tyres on anthing 18 and above and they really cost a lot and are harder to get.
I have been off-road quite a bit now in my SX and the Grandtreks are great, interestingly my terios had the Grandtreks also and I did Fraser Island and Bloomfield Track in the Far North with no problem. They key is to lower the pressures if offroading for long as this really makes the tyre more puncture resistant,gives better driver comfort and is better on the environment with the tyres cutting in less on the tracks some people forget that.

For the first time, I saw a shortie in Adelaide City yesterday. I can see how it is a great vehicle for travelling with just 2 people and is a great car for 4WDriving due to it short wheel base (better ramp over angles than LWB models) and lighter in weight (better fuel economy and easier to drag the vehicle up a steep hill or over obstacles).Comment
