Sleeping in the back

Hi All,

Have just sold my 80 Series and was looking at purchasing a standard 5 door prado...then noticed the 3 Door!! Love the look of them. I am a single male and don't need the extra room of the larger 5 doors. However, I would like a vehicle that I can sleep in the back of. I don't have time to check out a dealer at this stage but was wondering if any new 3 door owners have tried laying down in the back or if anyone had the measurements. If the centre seats came out that would be fine also.

Hi Josh,
How tall are you? My friend has a 3 door ZR, I've had a look in the back and the boot space is TINY, so I could only imagine how small the sleeping area would be with the 2nd row seats folded down. Another thing to be aware of is how level the sleeping area is after you fold down the seats. A friend of mine with a 5 door 150 usually sleeps in the back of his car when we go camping. However the 2nd and 3rd row sets dont align once folded down, so he has to put some sheets down to level it out. Hope it helps.

I am 170 cm tall so not very tall. If I was to get one I would try and get a drawer system in the back to get myself at the same height as the folded middle seats, and sleep across the both of them. Its what I did in my 80 series which gave me plenty of room, however not sure if this would work with the 3 door with the available space.
I think it might be best if I get to see one in person.

There is no middle row of seats in the 3 door and the folded up rear seats tumble up against the back of the front seats.

If you remove one of the rear seats and build up the floor so it is level there appears to be enough room to make a bed in a 3 Door more than 160cm long.

You would need a secure cargo net over everything loose in the back to protect you in case of accident.

The back seat splits 1/3 on the driver's side and 2/3 on the passenger side.

At floor level there is 43cm between the wheel arch and the other half of the back seat if you remove the drivers side but an extra 15 cm width if you build the bed above the wheel arch.

You need to contemplate where you are going to store things and how you will get in and out of the bed.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it, I've tried, I am 177cm tall and in no way could I get comfortable, that is with the back seats folded all the way forward into the footwells. Ended up sleeping in the passenger seat!!!
