  • UHF Radio in glove box

    Hi All

To give a quick background, I recently bought a Prado (150) GXL and am in the process of adding all the bells and whistles. The first four things on my list are a Snorkel, ARB alloy roof rack, dual battery system and a UHF radio.

The radio I am installing is a GME TX4800 and my partner doesn't want me to mount the radio in the console or anywhere too visible so I am considering mounting it in the glove box. Has anyone mounted their radio in their glove box and if so, what are the Pros and Cons? Alternatively, can anyone recommend any suitable alternate locations? Thanks

    Adrian

My apologies! I had done a fair bit of reading but obviously didn't type in those specific keywords. I will be sure to do so now!

I just read a post about a roof console for the 150 and they are cheap and look good. You can mount your radio there and they look super easy to fit. Go to site www.consoles.com.au for photos and fitting instructions and prices.

Re: UHF Radio in glove box

Well, maybe my search function is broken, but my search for "uhf glove box" in the Accessories (150 series) section yielded a total of 8 posts, all from a total of three threads (1 being this thread  ). The second thread relates to powering a UHF unit and the third thread is a member's write-up on his own UHF install. There is no thread (other than this one) dedicated to discussing potential locations to mount a UHF unit in a 150 Series, in the Accessories (150 Series) section (which is the section the thread should be in, if the thread exists). So while Adrian may not have used the search function before posting, I don't think he is asking questions that have specifically been asked before.

I can see where Adrian's other half is coming from on this one as UHF head units can be ugly, especially against a modern and well finished interior (IMO) such as the 150's. My folks had the same dilemma with their new Kakadu (they picked it up Friday ) - Mum's told the old boy it's just not gonna happen. And, I'm in two minds whether to install one into my GXL for this reason. So anyway, for what it's worth, I'd be interested to hear what anyone has to say on the questions posed by Adrian in his first post.

            Cheers,

            Ben

If you are going to fit an aftermarket satnav consider GX dash parts. See my build up thread: http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=11756
Its an expensive solution but does look neat!

Hi everyone, I have noticed this comment quite alot lately. My only concern is if everyone did a search and found something from a few years or months ago then the number of posts would decline dramaticly. In this case it has generated a posibly new though of a roof console. Also I have had a few ideas generated by someone elses post. If you are not interested or too busy to comment just dont open the thread.

Not trying to start an argument, but I think it is important to let people post without fear of a "do a search mate" comment.

                Just my 2 cents worth.
                Alan.

Re: UHF Radio in glove box

That's an awesome setup Schniff! That is probably my ideal setup however a little out of my budget at this point. I have saved the link to your build up thread for future reference.

Thanks for your comments Ben and Alan. Not wanting to get too off topic, while I appreciate Hutch's point, I think Alan hit the nail on the head, the purpose of a forum is to be dynamic and unless a topic has been discussed to death, I can only see new threads (within reason) and new points of view being a benefit to the entire community. Psychologically, we pay a lot of attention to the most recent information, discounting what came earlier. i.e. Recency trumps quality.

But back on topic, my partner has shot down the console idea "We don't need to go and spend any more money", yes fair call given I have just bought an ARB roof rack, battery tray and snorkel yesterday. So it looks like I'm back to the glove box. I am going to have a chat to the auto-electrian who will do the install for us and see if he has any other suggestions.

In the meantime, any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Re: UHF Radio in glove box

Just a quick follow up to my original post for anyone who may have the same question.

After giving it a fair bit of thought, I ended up opting to install the radio in the centre console as shown in the photo below. When its turned on, we'll have the handset sitting outside of the centre console and we've picked up a GME external speaker (SPK04) that will allow us to keep the console closed and still hear the audio.
