Maxtrax Mounting Kits

I have the previous iteration of the MaxTrax and purchased the mounting pin kit before I realised the new ones are key holed. I plan on key holeing the old version and mounting.

How and where I'm still uncertain but tempted to have an upright alongside the the inner part of my Rhino tray and the MaxTrax facinging out. I want to keep my basket space where possible.

Lostdingo let us know how you go. I am looking at two types of installation. The first one is most likely drilling through the bars and mounting as per maxtrax recommendations but am only planning this for daytrips etc. I have a Rhinorack mesh basket the large one which I pack up when going to Fraser etc so won't have the maxtrax across the top of the bars then so would ideally want something like you are talking about on an angle on the outside of the basket.

I agree, but that's exactly what their instructions say to do:

So is this the only way to mount the pins to the Toyota sports bars? I haven't bought a mounting pin set yet and was thinking it might be easier to just strap them to the bars (don't have a basket or platform). They could still be secured by putting one of those cable locks through the keyholes on the MaxTrax themselves.

You could also bolt a piece of unistrut to the top of the sports bars and then use Craig's traxrax. Few photos in that thread including how I fitted them to my ute.

I put mine inside the channel on the rhino sports bars which should be the same as the Toyota ones. I had to cut down the pins and I got some heavy duty M10 nuts and had to shave them down to fit in the channel but it works perfectly for me. There's a few photos in my build thread if you're interested.

I'm actually upgrading to Craig's TraxRax next week and I'll get a new set of pins to go with them (the thread to fit in the rails would be too short for the trax rax) so I'll probably put my old ones up in the for sale section if someone wants a set to fit inside their rails.

I'll have to take them off and measure them when I get a chance but it's not much. Maybe 5mm. I'd say it will be a smidge too short to take a full size nylock nut and a washer such as I'd put on the back of the traxrax. Inside the channel though, the shaved heavy duty nut can't turn so the pins don't come loose (or at least haven't yet).

I'd be interested in those pins Tiny if you do decide to sell them. At the moment I have no real need to go the full Maxtrax route, nice as they are.

Yeah, definitely going to get rid of them. I've been trying out the trax rax for the last week and they've been great. I'll figure out how much it'll cost to post the old pins down and PM you with a price and some pics (pretty busy though so may take ma a few days).
