  • Anyone installed a handheld uhf?

    Hi Everyone,

Has anybody installed a handheld UHF radio in their Prado?

I have recently purchased 2 x Uniden UH076SX 5 watt handheld units, mainly for bushwalking but would like to try to use one in my vehicle as well for convoy situations. The unit allows an external aeriel as well as a hand mic.

I've purchased the car charging unit (has a cradle) and looking for ideas of where to install it. Has anyone else done this? Where have you mounted it?

p.s. if the handheld doesn't work out performance-wise, I'll just buy a in-car model, this is an experiment.

hey skip ive got a gme tx 6100 5 watt handheld .you can also buy an in car kit for this . something ive noticed with mine is if you have it sitting in the console or low down in the car reception can be poor ie missing half the transmission even while in convoy .this happened on our last outing . i found if i used its clip holder and cliped it to the sunroof slide up high it was much better . it may be better if you can get the external aerial kit . try it out a few times before you mount it anywhere . i went for a handheld as i didn't want to hack holes in the console or mount it in the glovebox and you can take it out of the car .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

Thanks for that Kav. I was going to install an external aerial and also connect the charger to the dual battery.

Will need to extensively test to see how robust it is, otherwise the in-car will be the way to go.

        Skip,

i have installed a uniden handheld to my 150. i sit it down low beside the gear level on the drivers side using a handpeice mounting kit and put a handpeice up near the air con vents. I use a cig lighter charger and i have an external areial attached to it. This works quite well and is easy to remove when we are just driving around town or need it out of the car in the bush

A 5 Watt hand held if installed with an external antenna should perform just as well as an in-vehicle unit. If you can fit a remote speaker/mic it should work OK.
          Cheers, Wayne
