Recovery Points

I have recovery points like the red ones pictured by hutch near start of thread. Installed with smartbar. Only used 2 of three bolt holes and used a washer between rec point and chassis as a spacer at rear bolt to keep everything neat and forces in-line due to the smart bar mount on the front bolt hole. Very easy install with the nut on a wire supplied. I did break one of the plastic inserts you have to remove to feed the nut in though. If buying your own bolts be aware that you may need 1 coarse thread and one fine thread. Shouldn't be too much trouble for most people... especially if theres an extra set of hands around to feed the nut in.

Nat are all your bolts grade 12.9?My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

The 1st part is the ultimate tensile strength in 100s of MPa. So 12 is 1200MPa.
2nd part is yield strength expressed as a percentage of ultimate tensile strength. So .9 is 90% of UTS which is 1080MPa.
UTS is when a bolt breaks. Yield strength is when the bolt is stretched to its elastic limit. Beyond this, you'll get permanent deformation.

I might try and get some pictures to show exactly.
I notice just recently some people suggesting 12.9's are needed, they are no doubt better but 8.8 or grade 5 has been the standard on recovery points since Adam was a lad, the generic recovery points and most aftermarket recovery points come with grade 5 / 8.8's.
Edit: just realised 12.9 was mentioned here not 10.9, I dont recall ever seeing a 12.9 bolt, dont know how you would go buying any. 8.8's = Good, 10.9 = Great, 12.9 = probably overkill but if you can why not.

Not the clearest image but you should be able to see the 8.8 and 10.9 marked on these 2 metric bolts.
And a grade 8 bolt below with six lines, I didn't find a grade 5 bolt but basically they have every second line missing, so 3 lines.
Really puzzled now I think about this as to why the call for 12.9's. The 10.9 bolt pictured was removed from a semi truck chassis and was used to bolt on some of the suspension mounts. If I asked at my local bolt supplier for a 12.9 metric bolt they certainly wouldn't stock them and would be an order in only item.

Andrew 12.9 is quite common though more usual in cap head screws. They are usually though not always fine thread which is why the upper points for mine were originally fitted with 8.8s. The Roadsafe points come with 12.9s. I haven't checked but I wouldn't think that there was a huge difference in shear strength between the two. Highest spec bolts I have ever had to work with were M36 Nimonic alloy cap head screws (yes screws). Holding a flange on a valve body. Had to undo about 40 of them and broke two impact inhex sockets (big arse allen keys) in the process. Nimonic is the sort of material exhaust valves are made from.
EDIT: here you go Jasen,
But you bought yours cheap off evilbay so they probably have something like
"Glade twelb poont none, genuun gud bol"
Check. Grade 12.9 also has no head markings other than the numbers stamped. At least I have never seen more than 6 flashes on a bolt head.

My RoadRunner supplied and Roadsafe manufactured points came with 12.9 HT bolts.
MJ I notice your top bolt on the bullbar mount is still 8.8, I'm pretty sure that's the standard TJM supplied one.Last edited by fido666; 27-03-2013, 09:39 AM.

That's OK Jasen, just wanted to clear that up.
I've just been on the phone to RoadSafe chasing up the re-designed points, looks like it will be at least another couple of weeks away. Samples based on my modified point have gone off to the factory for fabrication, just need to wait for them to come back for another test fit.
