  • UHF mounting

Recently acquired my Prado and am just starting to review my wish list.
After I get a bull bar I will fit a UHF but am wondering where other members have located theirs. At first glance there is not a standout , obvious place.
Are there a number of locations and what are the pros & cons

Is there any difficulty or tricks for installation. I notice in one ofthe manuals there is a warning about discussing installation with Toyota service so as not to affect electrics of the vehicle

Appreciate the advice of the group
    regards
    Mal

I used an Icom IC 440, a benefit of this unit is that all the controls and the speaker are in the microphone.

So you can put the body of the unit pretty much anywhere you want, all you need to see and have access to is the microphone.

Downside is it's 40 channel, not 80 channel compatible.

I have fitted a GME TX3540 which like the Icom is a remote head unit and it's also the latest 80 channel. I have mounted the main unit below the "A" pillar on the passengers side above the kick panel. There are some captive nots and some studs up there to bolt it to as well. There is a little rubber grommet in the passengers side of the firewall as well to bring the coax cable through. Win win. The radio kit comes with an extension for the microphone cable as well with plenty of length to reach the drivers side. Easy install.

        Thanks for your advice
It seems remote head unit is the go.
At this stage I do not want to install a roof console so remote head it will be.

        regards

I note yours is a 150 and mine a 120 but the clip out function is good as you can hide the handset.

              Hello Malc,

I recently fitted a Uniden UH7760 radio ( to my GX 150 ) which has 80 Channels fitted and all controls are in the microphone. The main body is fitted below the passengers seat framework and the microphone sits in the console pocket next to the cigarette lghter socket. We simply place the micrphone under the seat and nothing is on view from outside except the antenna. Cost, including 6 db antenna was $349. No new holes anywhere either.

              regards

              Ross

Install it behind the center stack. If you do a search I have put some photos up of where i installed mine, have had it installed for a year and apart from the microphone, the rest of the install is invisible.
