  • iPad 2 Installation

    Hi

After many a web search and looking at different solutions (ordering a few from ebay) I found a solution for "secure" mounting my iPad 2 to my vehicles dash. It was essential that the installation allow for easy and quick removal of the iPad when I exit the vehicle and a windscreen mount was not an option. I used this during a recent trip to Fraser Island and the iPad did not move at all. I actually had to lock the screen rotation because with some of the bumps and direction of the vehicle the motion sensor in the iPad considered it to be tilting of the device.

Attached is a few photos of the equipment used and the installation.

    Items:
    1. Belkin iPad 2 back cover from BigW $19.99
    2. Velcro Heavy Duty from BigW $3
    3. Brodit / Clipon Custom Mount (Part No 654443) for Prado 150 Series from Strike $48.99
    4. Belkin iPad Charger (not iphone version) from JB Hifi $39.99

I did not fix the Clipon Mount with the provided double stick take, I just clipped in.

    Conclusion:
Having to reverse without the camera was a challenge at first. Although the center vents are partially blocked, the iPad stayed nice and cool and mostly out of the son. Cranking up the cooling helped to compensate for the lost use of the center vents. Air blocked by the ipad spills on to the windscreen and your feet. My iPhone use to get very hot in the TomTom Carkit and this problems was now avoided. Satellite reception was also very good and I did not notice any loss of signal. Mp3 via bluetooth from the iPad was an dded bonus. Although some may argue +$100 for the solution is expensive, in my opinion this is a bargain looking at the functionality you get. I used TomTom for onroad navigation and VMS for offroad navigation.

I did not take pics of the actual bracket, but you can see it on the product website:
        http://www.brodit.com/product.html?i...rado&year=2011

All I did was use Velcro between the cover and the actual mount. I used a piece of velcro stuck to surface of the bracket. This attache to the velcro on the back of the ipad cover. You will see in the attached pic that I have not yet removed the double sided tape(small white pieces) that came with bracket. I first wanted to try and see if it works. The bracket fits very firm. With effort you can slide it from left to right. If you inspect the clip on the product page you will notice that it has small lip on the bottom and top that clicks about 5mm inside the vent to the top and bottom. To remove the mount you have press the the two ends with some effort closer to each other. The double sided tape is just an extra measure to prevent it sliding from right to left. Mine did not move an inch with our recent trip to Fraser

After watching the iPad take flight whilst tacking a few lumps at Fraser Island I've taken up mullerwh's solution and I'm pretty happy with it. I just wish I could work out how to get audio thru the audio system via Bluetooth! Got the iPad and Prado paired but no audio for the life of me!! Any ideas anyone?

When you are pairing the device there are two options of the type of device, it is the same as when you pair an iPhone. One option is as a music device, I can't remember the specific title of the two options but try both and one should work.

            Cheers

Thanks for that Dave - I will give it a whirl. Yep, I use memory map and find it very good. I particularly like the track vector that shows
Direction of travel and where you will be in 5 minutes and the fact you can demo most of the maps for around 10 days. The screen size of the iPad just works so well with mapping.
