  • toyota towbar - sensors turn off?

    Hi Guys
Just had the towbar fitted to my car. I have read that the sensors turn off automatically when a trailer is connected?

Is this true? As mine doesn't......?

Not for mine. I turn them off manually when towing.

Don't know if a VX is different, but I don't turn the sensors off when towing. I will check next time if they are active or not as the sensors logo on the screen is still lit.

I have to manually disable the sensors on my GXL too.

Toyota may have changed this so that the sensors are disabled when a trailer is connected but if they haven't it is very easy to do either by quietening the sensor speaker (or manually switching off the sensors) or fitting a different trailer plug socket which will do the job automatically. Both are discussed in here...

BUT!!!!! Remember to switch the sensors back on when you have disconnected the trailer.

                Could be quite embarrassing otherwise.

I did that the other day, unhitched trailer and reversed bus into shed and managed to stop about 1mm away from welder and toolbox... Whoops.

I was reversing & thinking, why aren't the sensors going off as I have too be close enough. Shock Horror.
I did stop in time but only just.

Like I said, it would be fairly embarrasing. HENCE THE WARNING.

Do they reactivate when you remove the trailer plug?

                          Starbuck76,
What year / model 150 do you have? I purchased the 2010 GXL new and Toyota installed my tow bar and I have to manually turn them off.....

Apologies to all as I have made a dumbass mistake.

I don't tow very often as I don't own a trailer, but that is no excuse for posting info without checking things out fully.

I have a 2011 VX which comes with front and rear park sensors. A graphic on the dash indicates which sensor has activated and the distance (graphically) to the object, along with audio which changes pitch proportional to distance. The front sensors are active when in R, N, D or any of the S gears and the engine is running or the key is in the second press (ON in the old speak) position.
However, the rear sensors are only active when Reverse is selected and the engine is running or in the ON position. Having a trailer plug in does not change this. When driving forwards there is no beeping as the sensors are inactive, but when reversing the trailer (which I didn't do) the sensors are active and warn you that an object is close to the car.

Pages 248, 249 of the manual describe how to turn off the sensors if required.
