  • Bike Carrier on Spare Wheel 2011 Prado 150

I am looking at a Bike carrier for 2 Bikes which can be mounted on the 2011 Prado 150 Spare Wheel - there are a few products around but none seem to have strength and versatility to get around the rear camera in the Spare Wheel Hub...has anyone done this ?

I would be concerned about all the extra weight and leverage on the wheel mounts.

I wouldn't mount anything on the spare wheel other than the spare wheel

Agree - apart from maybe a shovel carrier.

Beg to differ... I use a Thule Spare Me 2 bike carrier on my 120
            http://www.thule.com.au/details.php?p_id=229
No problems or concerns with the weight... though the bikes are lightweight carbon fibre roadies weighting about 8 kg each
Wouldnt use it in off road situations though... more out of concern for the bike$

I had a spare wheel carrier on my 120 without any problems, 1000's of km and many on dirt roads too. Just dont open the door with the bikes on.

When i got my 150 i bought an ISI Offroad rack, mid length extreme duty. It doesnt even move on dirt roads when mounted with the stabilizer, they are not the cheapest but will last a lifetime and when you compare Thule and other rear mount twin bike carriers they are ballpark price.

              ISI Offroad rack

I would recommend the following for road use.

                  http://www.caravanshop.com.au/?Nav=P...tegory_id=272&

Really good product, have had it for over 6 years. The weight of the plastic rear wheel cover (which you will need to remove) will be be replaced by the weight of the alloy rack. It carrys 2 bikes. Bear in mind a high lift jack weighs around 14kgs, so 2 road bikes will be around the same.

I can pm some pictures of how it looks fitted. Obviously not for off road use but a really convenient way of getting your bikes around. We drove from Perth to Tasmania and back to a mountain bike event with no problems (at that time fitted to a Land Rover Discovery)

This was partly why I got the GX Prado (rather than GXL) so it saved relocating the rear view camera mounted on the spare wheel

I am sure I will get some advice/abuse for suggesting this, but thought it might help

Also, have fitted a VMS GPS into the dash of the GX, it works awesome. Really pleased with the off rod mapping

At least they warn not to use on the back of a caravan. I met a guy with the same jayco as i have and he had a 3 bike carrier mounted on the rear wheel carrier/bar, he said it "jumps about a bit" but its solid
