  • Roof Top Storage Bags - What do People Use?

    Guys.....

After sorting out what I'm using as a roof rack, I'm now on the lookout for a good Waterproof/Dustproof Storage Bag that I can mount on the Roof Rack.
A mate of mine bought the MSA bag and seems happy with it. I've looked at the Rhino Bag, but on closer inspection, I don't like the way they waterproof the seams via using a form of sticky tape. I looked inside one and could already see some of the tape starting to peel off and that's b4 there's any gear in the bag....
The other one that was on display was the Bushranger Bag (I think?). It comes with a 5yr warranty and looks OK...

What's other peoples' experiences, ideas, comments, etc

    cheers.....

I had one made to fit my rack by my local canvas guy. Double vinyl bottom and canvas top with Velcro dust seal over the zip. Dust proof but I have had water get in if it is able to pool anywhere. Just over $300. Large Velcro straps hold it to the roof and then Seat belt webbing ties it all down.

      Cheers

Years ago I scored a bargain at Supercheap Auto. It was the last one on the shelf and an end of stock item. Wasn't the prettiest (like a blue camo nylon canvas top with a black rubberrised base). but it had all the necessary straps and clips to securely fasten down, along with plenty of velcro flaps to cover the zips. It's been a good bag. I have always taken the extra precaution however to ensure that when packing sleeping bags, clothing or anything can be upset by wet/ weather, to throw them inside a wheelie bin garbage bag just to be sure. I think even if I bought a top of the range bag, I would still do the same thing....

We have a Freedom Camping rooftop bag, good quality and fits on the rack very easily. I should have gotten this years ago instead of trying to jam things into every spare spot in the car.

            http://www.freedomcamping.com.au/rtb.html

We tend to put all the light bulky stuff up top such as sleeping bags, bedding etc and any other stuff which wont fit in the back !

            cheers

We have the Rhino bag and it's been great. Never leaks dust or water and has been in torrential rain.

Heat tape is used by a lot of top if the line products and works well at sealing seams. Just look at any $500 Gortex jacket.

                Cheers, Sam.

It would interesting to know if the tape was also sewn on or just stuck on. The Salesman said they use to sew through the tape as well but that with new bags they appear to have changed that to just sticking the tape on. From what I saw, part of the tape had started to come away a small bit, so I assume when u have gear in there moving around a bit that it would only get worse..... yes/no?

I am on my second Rhino bag as the first one had the inner lining fall apart on the flatter leading edge (not the tape) and was replaced under warranty. The new one has extended side flaps and velcro to improve the sealing of the bag. I can say after 15K of dusty outback travel both bags have remained water and dust free. This includes driving in the rain. The current one is a better design than the original.

The only time I have had water inside the bag was when I left it on the roof in heavy downpour and the water pooled (a few cm's deep (about 7 to 10cm)) on top of the bag. It did let some water through into the bag etc but alot less than the pool on top. If I had enabled the water to run off during this rain it would have remained dry inside

Originally I had a custom bag made with heavy duty zips and long weather strips but it died after only 15 years service. About two years ago bought the Rhino bag and it has been every bit as good. The bag has been driven through and sat in some incredibly heavy rain and I have never had a drop of water in it. Dec 2010 the gear sat for two days in the rain (and you know what that was like!) while we were waiting for the rain to stop so we could get to the camp site and nothing was wet.

I also have a Rhino bag. A couple of points:
                        1. Don't rely on it being waterproof - pack the important stuff (bedding) in plastic bags for extra protection.
                        2. Mine takes up half the rack. It is too big for smaller trips, though invaluable on my big trips. I probably need a 2nd smaller bag.
                        3. Had a warranty claim due to the waterproof lining falling apart - I was very pleased with their service.
                        4. They are a quality product, and for my eyes, they look great too.

Yeah letting water pool on any roof top bag will probably result in leaking. Certainly canvas ones.

Has anyone got experience with the Bushranger ones or the MSA ones?

Re: Rhino Bags inner lining failing

How old were the bags and how often do/did u use them? My concern would be if u use them only 1 or 2x a year & that they only have a 3yr warranty, that by the time the inner lining starts to fail or show signs, then it's too late for a warranty claim.....

For something that "might" only get used a few times a year (ie in my case), I would want it to last 10+ years, especially when it's not in use that it's stored in a dark place out of sunlight or any moist areas....

Don't get me wrong, I liked the look of the Rhino Bag, but I am concerned as to the inner tape rubbing or peeling off, especially with the $$ u pay for them

                              Hi Rob.

In my case, the lining failure occurred after my very first trip - I noticed it was cracking and peeling when I got home. I've had the replacement bag for around 2 years and used it only 3 or 4 times. After all that time, most of it being folded up in the box it was shipped in, the lining still looks new on this bag. I'm guessing they had some manufacturing issue that's been resolved.
