  • Full Load plus Cargo Barrier and SRS deployment question

    Hi Guys

While I work out the plan for future mods I have looking at the best config for the back of my 150.

I fully get the cut out cargo barrier concept to accomodate curtain SRS airbags and love the fact my kids are a little safer in the 2nd and 3rd rows.

However, it occured to me that on a trip with kids in the 2nd row and a boot full of shelves, fridge, drawers etc etc that the airbags will still deploy in the case of an accident.

What is the likely outcome of airbag deployment in a fully loaded boot area?

The rear airbags for the 3rd row seats was a major factor for me in choosing the Prado. I'm no expert but a couple of points in the event of side airbag deployment, first it would take a major shunt for them to deploy. With the cutout cargo barrier in place the 2nd row should still be protected and the airbags will try to deploy in the 3rd row obviously squeezing around any solid objects. I'm not sure what would happen if there is no space, as I suspect the 2nd and 3rd row are protected by a single continuous airbag, hence the cutout in the cargo barrier.

If the air bags do go off, damage to stuff will be the least of your worries.

This is a very valid point you have raised OscarOne. I too would like to know what would happen with the airbags in the scenario you have mentioned. I don't give a rats about anything in the rear getting damaged, I would just like to know that airbag deployment with a full cargo area is not going to hinder the performance of the airbags in the second row.

The more I am looking into things like this that may affected my build, is the more I wonder if i would have just been better off ordering a 5 seat GX. Why, ohh why Toyota could you just not release a 5 seat gxl for the "outback tourers" among us that want the extra features but not 7 seats? I sure hope they rectify this in the next prado update, it would save me (and no doubt many others) a lot of headaches!

Thanks Guys for entertaining my late night wonderings!

I have looked, but to no avail, for a photo or even a diagram showing the deployed airbags.

RWO, I wouldn't hold my breath on the next upgrade being more suited to the Outback Tourers of this world, there are more Prados doing the school/ shopping run than exploring the trails of this great land.
