  • TJM steel side steps

    Hi guys,
ive been a member for a while and this is my first post so ill introduce myself my name is Darren, and im from Adelaide SA. Ive recently bought a new 2012 150 series prado GXL in turbo diesel manual, ive had it for a month and couldnt be happier with it, my last car was a triton so theres a big difference between the two. My question is regarding the TJM steel side steps i fitted a set on the weekend, i was told they were side air bag compatible there is a sensor on the left hand side that i gather is the side air bag sensor. i had to make up a bracket for it to go on as there was nothing with the kit. If others have fitted themselves or had TJM fit them what was used for mounting the sensor back to the car. Thanks for your time.

    cheers,

    Darren

I thought the sensor was built into the side of the car. I have the Powerful4x4 ones and there are no sensors that I am aware of (ripped the original steps off on a rock and did not see any wires )

I have the Powerful 4x4 sliders as well and agree re sensors...at least that's the way it was explained to me by the Powerful 4x4 guys at last years 4x4 show in Melb.

I've installed the TJM side steps on mine and didn't have to do anything regarding the sensors. I too believe they are built into the car. The whole sensor issue i believe is to stop the car have x2 or x3 the impact force from the side before the actually car side compresses and deploys the airbag because of a solid steel structure.

On a side note i was quoted $180 to fit these side steps.

Are they a simple bolt on job or is it worthwhile paying the fee?

I fitted the last side steps to my previous hilux which required 8 bolts to the chassis each side.

            Any info would be great.

Hi Darren, do you have one on the right hand side as well? The only thing I can think of it's the wiring harness for the sidestep illumination on the VX and Kakadu. These have two (2) lights on each side which are actually mounted to the underside of the side steps.

That's all I can think of.

no its only on one side , and it was mounted to the original steps. thanks for the thoughts. If the other guys had theres done by tjm was there anything like this left over or was it taken off.

That is just a plug with a water proof plug blank on it to protect the circuit. I think you will find it is for the VX / Kakadu step illumination and there will be one on the opposite side just mounted in a different area. If you remove the blank off of that duetsch plug (the grey plug) you will see it is just a blank cap. The airbag sensors look entirely different and are a solid looking black angled rectangle box thing.

I would remove your bracket and tuck the cable up and zip tie it out of the way so that it does not get hung up next time you head out and play.

                    Hope this helps.
