How to explain the benefits of a snorkel to the wife???

I am trying to find the best approach, other than the most direct, to explain the benefits of fitting a snorkel to the new 150 Altitude...

Please provide me with some guidance

Provides better economy, cleaner air, car will run better and it is cheap insurance for a $20000 motor.

It will save her jumping out the car in the middle of a river to hook the strap up to tow out a waterlogged vehicle.

Probably best to stick to the cheap insurance for your motor.

I can see, this could be a hard sell, as she will explain to me the kids can jump out in the middle of the river...... or she might even just say, no more trips away

Nah mate - you are missing the point here. Wife acceptance has a lot to do with "framing" and nothing to do with facts and figures.
I learned this a few years ago when I wanted to trade my very fast road motorbike in for an even faster off-road version...
I decided that a completely new approach was needed, because there was no way my (awfully logical and budget-conscious) wife was going to allow that to happen. So I came home one day and told her that I needed a new car. Yes a new car. One that was safer for the kids, more economical and so that I could park on the 4th floor of the car park with some dignity - amongst the directors of the company.
The overall cost of the new car would have been around $10,00 additional cost. You can imagine her reaction!
I let her stew on that for about a week and then slowly started to retreat. "OK, maybe I'll wait another year" and " what if I get my commission cheque?" were common conversations. About a week after I had started to back off the new car conversation I called her from the Honda dealership…
“Honey, I was driving past Honda today and I noticed that they are having a stocktake sale. They will give me $4,000 for my ‘bike and get me onto an off-road 450 for an additional $1,500”
“YOU WANT A NEW CAR AND A NEW ‘BIKE?!?!?”
“No, no, honey – I thought about it and the car is just good money after bad. At least this will be heaps safer than the road bike and we’ll save some cash.”
“I suppose we would save cash, but you don’t really need another bike.”
“Well, I’d rather have an off-road because it’s safer, but I will save $1,000 if I sign today.”
Anyway, she still thinks that we saved about $8,000 and I had an off-road bike for a few years
The point is that you should build your wish list – all of it. Suspension, lights, drawers, lockers, satellite TV and the kitchen sink – all of it. Then tell her you need at least half of the stuff for an upcoming trip. Then “settle” for the snorkel… Framing.

It was easy for me (although the wife still complained) but my cousin gave his diesel a drink of water in the Wombat State forest and it was simply a large puddle not even a river crossing.

The end result was new engine ( I forget the value).

Now that scared the crap out of both her and me hence a Snorkel was a rather easy sell. :-P
