  • Fitting ARB Compressor to under bonnet position

    Hi

Just looking for some advice I have got a CKMA12 ARB Compressor for the rig Petrol 150 series. I want it just for doing tyres and kids stuff etc. I want to install under the bonnet and I have a really good auto electrician to do the wiring so I am only fitting the unit. Any advice for location under the bonet and is it a difficult task my sparky will only charge $80 to do the wiring and the switch so has anybody fitted the unit and what advice is out there.

I'm not sure on the space under the bonet ina 150, but I'm guessing it's similar to an FJ cruiser (which is based on a petrol 150 anyhow). In the FJ it fits in the rear passenger side of the engine bay - back towards the firewall. This spot may suit on a 150 as well - worth some investigation.

Do you have a picture of the passenger side of the engine bay up near the firewall?

Currently developing a mount, need to see a fabricator about it and get pricing but hopefully will be able to get some made relatively quickly.

On the 90 when I mounted a Bluetongue II compressor I made a little angle bracket that I bolted to the side of the compressor using the head bolts. This had the relay and switch mounted on it with only the main supply wire running to the auxiliary battery via fuse. Very neat and compact. The 120 originally had a Bluetongue IV in it and the wiring was done by a 4wd shop. Apart from the wiring being badly undersized and ultimately sizzled the switch was mounted on a bracket off the guard and I found the relay cable tied to another wiring harness. So when I mount the CKMTA12 in the winch space of the 120 I will again make up a little bracket with all the bits together so that they are easily accessed and seen. The Bluetongue IV now lives in the old Rodeo and again I have made up an angle bracket much the same as the old 90 arrangement.

Bit hard to see but you can get the overall idea. Lots of people do similar and others run the switch inside if they have or plan to fit lockers.

The 90... Aluminium angle with switch, relay and extra fuse.

120 though not clear... Switch is on the guard to the left, the relay next to it isn't for the compressor.

And where the new compressor will live... Bracket will be standalone near the aux battery where power is coming from(I think).

          Hi Jason

I have a 150 GXL diesel and fitted my ARB compressor at the rear passenger side as per below. Installation is fairly easy, a bit fiddly to get to all the bolts/nuts etc, but went OK. I wired the switch into the cab with no problems. You can see more detail in my rig buildup below.

Same here, 150 diesel. I also posted the wire colours and where to pick them up in the "useful wire" thread.

I mounted the compressor on the RH wheel arch just forward or the brake master assembly. From memory one bolt went into an exising hole and a second with the addition of a spacer. I made up a bracket for the inside bolts. Tricky to do but fits like a glove. The space on the left guard was already filled with wiring, relays and a fusebox.

When the arb compressor is used with front and rear lockers, is there still somewhere to connect an air hose for tyre inflation (i dont have lockers or the comp, yet)?

Is the twin tank worth the extra cost, and is it small enough to fit somewhere on a 150?

rwo do you mean twin head compressor? If so there is no way it will fit under the bonnet, that's why mine will be in the winch space and even then it is tight. To give you an idea on physical size the holes in the bracket are 14mm dia ARB sell a locker maniold kit which is a small air tank with the relays to direct air pressure to the lockers.

                  http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-air-compressors/

Look under accessories. You can download manuals and info too on the site. I can't find the link at the moment but I think it is via the locker page.

And yes the manifold kit allows an outlet for tyre inflation.

                  Edit part 2:

Go to the ARB site, Products and open Air lockers and accessories
Go to Service and Parts manuals and then download
Click to enter and go to section 3 Compressor Parts Lists

The various ARB compressors are listed and if you click on the subsection it will open a pdf with the manual for that compressor. Click on 3.6 CKMTA12 and 24 and page 5 shows the manifold kit. It may show up on the others as well I haven't checked.

There are a couple of outlets in the tank as well as the solenoids. You can of course make up your own manifold which will undoubtedly be cheaper.

I reckon I could fit one of the twin compressors under the bonnet... Next time I'm down at ARB I'll see if I can just put it under there as a test fit.

                    I can't see a reason why it won't fit.

Only issue I see is the fact it weighs about 5000 pounds.

Good luck wooley. And they are only 4,378 lbs. Don't exaggerate. Or has MLC hacked your account and is actually writing this too.

                          Wooley,

I did a test mount with the 5002.5lb twin set up, and due to the extra weight it took from my pocket, I decided it was not worth it.... even at dodgy dave prices......

Hey rwo, take a look at the pic i posted above, do you see the silver cylinder with 2 plugs in it..... they are for the front and rear locker solenoids so the answer is yes, it can be used for tyre inflation and twin lockers.
