  • Fitting a winch to TJM T13 bar

I have the TJM T13 Outback bar which has a low mount winch design. I've spotted an XTM 12,000lb synthetic rope winch in the current BCF catalogue for $599. It mentions "low mount" in the specs but can anyone comment on it's suitability for my bar?

I spoke to TJM today and was quoted $1100 for a 9,500lb synthetic rope winch on special plus $250 to fit it.

I know the bar will need to come off but how hard is it to fit a winch?

I'm not familiar with the TJM bar but I've got a ARB one & I reckon I should be able to remove the bottom protective plate and feed the winch up from underneath w/o having to remove my bullbar.... is the TJM bar similar in that way??

There are plates on the underside of the TJM T13 Outback bar on the wings. I'm not sure if there would be enough room to feed the winch through. And then there's the issue of bolting it on to the winch plate to consider. Or are you referring to the bash plates?

A "low mount" winch is what you need, you don't necessarily need to remove the bullbar, lots of bars can have a winch fitted without removal. Fitting a winch isn't all that hard, 4 bolts to mount the winch, mounting the control box varies depending on where you want it mouthed, then wiring all depends on how much needs to be changed from what comes with the winch.

$250 to fit a winch seems reasonable to me.

        Cheers Andrew

Any opinions on the choice of winch (TJM vs XTM) AJ?

I don't have any experience with either, however most of the cheaper winches nowadays seem to go ok.

I'm looking into the Tigerz11 Hercules winch as well, the 12,000lb with Dyneema synthetic rope is only $449. I'm not sure about the fairlead though, uses a aluminium hawse type rather than a roller type.

U only use roller for wire, the rope can get caught in a roller.

I fitted the Tigerz 11 Grande winch without removing the my TJM T13 bar without any problems, not sure the dimensions of your winch.

Removed the grill and a metal bracket running from one side to the other and easily placed the winch in position. I wasn’t sure this would work but was surprised how much room I had. Certainly worth a go before removing the bar.

Thanks Hutch, I just found that in their FAQs as well.

I haven't bought a winch yet but was considering the Tigerz11 Hercules. I believe the Grande has a better control box but with some remedial work on the seals could the Hercules control box be made a bit more water proof? Good to know you got it on without removing the bar, wasn't looking forward to that.

The only thing I can say to be careful of is the width of the winch, measure that first and compare it in size to the TJM and Warn XD series and if it is that range you will be fine. Did TJM give you the control box mounting bracket with your bar, comes in every box and is designed to fit the TJM winch but you can easily mount another make.

You should also be able to remove the grille and fit the winch in that way without removing the bar. The only thing you may have to do is rotate the gear box on the winch to get easier access to the free spool / engage lever.

                      Hope that helps.

The bar was on the vehicle when I bought it so I didn't get any extra brackets with it. The previous owner claimed there was a winch on it when traded but I can see no evidence there was ever one there, the original cover over the winch fairlead port is still intact, etc.

Thanks for the tip on the width though Rogerthatv2, I hadn't considered that issue. Although if a Grande winch has been fitted to the T13 bar I would think a Hercules would be the same. I will check anyway, would hate to buy one then discover it doesn't fit.

A t13 bar is designed to fit a winch so you should have no problems with the width.
The only issue you might find is the fairlead. The last winch I fitted needed an Offset fairlead this is because with a synthetic rope it Might rub on the opening as it did with the one I fitted. This was not to a T13 bar so it might be different.

I've just found the Ridge Ryder branded 12,000lb at Supercheap Auto, appears to be the same type of winch as the Tigerz11 Grande but cheaper at $565 on special till the 12/12 - http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...09#Description

This one also looks the same as the XTM branded one sold via BCF and Rays and carries the same 12 month warranty.

                              Hi fido666
I fitted my Meanmother winch to my TJM T13 bar myself without any issues. The meanmother winch came with a step by step instruction book on how to fit it. Once the grill and bash plates were removed it was a sinch to put in place. Standard fair lead as supplied with the winch was all that I required. I had the cover over the winch fairlead port also and removed when i went to fit the winch. When you take the cover off is there a bracket in behind that cover that has a rectangle cut out and a threaded hole either side that you can see?

have a look at this link which gives the dimensions of the one I fitted so you can compare to what you are looking at http://www.haigh.com.au/meanmother/9...theticrope.php
