  • Anyone installed an ARB compressor behind air box on 150 TD?

I have searched on this but couldn't find an answer so apologies if already covered on PP.
Have just bought a 2012 GXL TD and want to fit both an extra fuel filter plus an ARB compressor under the bonnet. The fuel filter needs to go near the existing filter so I am wondering whether a compressor will fit on the drivers side behind the air box. Anyone done this successfully or is it too tight there? Its a whole new learning curve modding a 150 after doing a 120

Hi Wayne, it will definetly fit, just pretty tight. I just shaped an aluminium bracket to mount the compressor on. I haven't got around to doing a build up thread but will dig out some photos for you.

    Cheers

Wayne, check out page 3 of the below thread. I posted some pics of the ARB CKMA12 and bracket I made to sit in the spot you are on about. Bit fiddly but definately achievable.

I removed the entire airbox whilst fabricating the bracket. Just be sure to dummy fit the airbox back in before finally welding up the bracket. I got caught out with insufficent clearance and had to cut and reweld the bracket to correct. Should have known better.

All wired up with one of ABR SIDEWINDERS dash switches and it works a treat.

      Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Gotta love this forum. Josh, if you can dig out some photos, that would be great. It will be good to compare what you guys came up with. It clearly fits ok. Chriso, thanks for the link. Interesting that you didn't use the ARB switch. I used the ARB switches in my 120 and I don't find them particularly user friendly
        Thanks again...........Wayne

The ARB switch that came with my compressor was too big to fit in the 150 series dash slots. The 120 series has bigger slots than the later 150. The ABR SIDEWINDER switch looks and operates like factory. Unfortunately he can only supply them with a spotlight emblem on them so I just blanked the switch out with a paint marker.

Wayne, this is a piece of 3mm aluminium plate, I just cut it to size on my drop saw, (fine tooth blade) and then shaped it with a belt sander. It utilises the three existing studs for mounting the plate, with a 20 or 25 mm nut extension on the back one to bring it up level. It is tight to bolt in and fit the compressor but works extremely well. I also have the ARB tank which I may mount inside the bullbar one day. It cost me about $5 to make the bracket, so a cheap option, pretty sure I still have the template if you want one.

            Cheers

Thanks Josh, good ideas and pics. It certainly is tight. Wondering what order you bolted items up. From your pictures looks like you bolted the compressor cradle to your bracket, then the bracket to the inner guard then the compressor onto the cradle. Is that correct?

I tried it in that order but from memory it was to awkward to do up the hex screws that hold the compressor to its mount. So I removed my bracket, mounted the compressor and refitted it. I just had to use a ratchet spanner to do up the bolts. I still need to tidy up the electrical loom and either find a new switch for the dash such as the newpro tech or do some cabin carnage for the ARB one to fit. A little bit fiddly but great to know that it's always there and one less thing to forget when you go away.

I haven't got my compressor yet, but when I do I will investigate mounting behind the plastic trim in the rear LHS, there is a huge void of wasted space below the cup holder. Front LHS has fuel/water separator and right side behind the air box has the Provent so under-bonnet mounting is pretty much out for me.

I saw pics somewhere of ARB's dual compressor in that spot so space shouldn't be an issue.

                  Food for thought...

                  EDIT: See here.

Just be mindful rwo, they do generate a fair bit of heat when you are airing four tyres back up.

Would it be too much to safely mount in that location?

For example we inflated eight tyres from 22 psi and the coupling was too hot to touch for a few minutes and that was giving it a bit of a break in between. Probably depends on how long you run it with out a break, It should be 50% duty time at 22 deg c. Personal preference where you mount it, but I'm happy with mine in the engine bay.

Wish I had thought of that nut extension when doing mine... Nice work bud.

Thanks mate, took a bit of thinking, but a neat result!
