  • No Holes in Dash DIY UHF Microphone mount

    Wanted to make a mount for my UHF microphone without drilling any holes in very expensive dash panels, so I have come up with this method. Looks ok but has not been tested on a corrugated track. I have spaced back the mount for the passenger seatbelt warning light which has allowed a thin steel bracket to be bent up and attached behind the vertical dash moulding with exterior grade double sided tape (which was the biggest expense). To fill in the gap around the light after spacing it back 3mm with some scraps of plastic under the screws, I bought some 4.5mm thick sticky backed black foam tape from Clark Rubber and cut it into strips about 4mm wide. Before sticking the strips on, I removed some small plastic ribs from behind the dash moulding around the opening for the warning light. To mount the mike bracket on the steel bracket, I filed a recess in the back half before sandwiching the two bracket halves together. Hopefully the photos will show what I have done. I am happy with the way it looks but the double sided tape is still not proven.

    Cheers.........Wayne

    Seems like a lot of work. I just stuck mine straight to the dash with the double sided tape, two layers deep so it forms to the rounded shape of the dash easily. It's been all the way through the peak of a plus 40 degree WA summer and hasn't moved.

      I agree, much more work to achieve a similar result, however I wanted mine to be removable hopefully without any visible trace. I believe you can cut the double sided tape with dental floss or fishing line to separate the parts but this leaves a layer of adhesive on both parts. This is why I went to the trouble (I like a challenge as well).

        Your idea is similar to what they do with the click-on mounts but they are around $45. I was just going to stick mine on with double sided tape but I do like the idea of no marks being left if you decide to remove it.

            I admire your hard work but like post two said a lot of hard work. I followed Gramps idea;

            Barring spraying the joist hanger black the job took about 10 seconds to install. FWIW mine looks just like Gramps'. A truly brilliant idea and has not moved 1 inch!! The mic sits in a great position too!
            Cheers.

              I just used silastic, put some on the back of the mic bracket, sticky taped it in place, left it over night, removed the tape, all systems go!
              Its been there 3 years so far, and no issues to report, I think the silastic's flexibility is very forgiving on rough roads.
              Did this with the last hilux we had too, very easy to remove when it comes time to sell

                Same here gtx, did the silastic trick on my old Patrol. Ripped it off and gave the thin layer of silastic a rub with my finger and good as gold. The double sided tape comes off easy too. The sticky cleans up easy, if you use it for a while and decide you don't like the location it can be moved easily. I'm not one for marking interiors or drilling holes. With everything I've mounted on my car I've drilled one hole.

                  macaroon1, you have a 120 and the dash parts fit together differently on the 150, so gramps idea is not really going to work on the 150.

                  Craigo, I used permanent double sided tape which doesn't just peel off. May be overkill I admit. Haven't been game to try silastic as I thought once it stuck that was it. Looks like I was wrong
                  Cheers

                    Would the silastic pull the paint off the silver panels if you try and remove it? Was just going to use the permanent outdoor double side tape to mount my mic holder but worried it won't come off too easily if I decide to move the holder or sell the car. Just looked at the Click on holders again and they are nearly $50 plus $12 shipping, a bit exxy just to stick a mic holder on the dash.

                        I've never stuck it on the silver bit, I've only to look at it the wrong way and it scratches. But that's an easy enough fix with a sharpie silver permanent marker ;-)
