  • Wire to windscreen mounted Navman

Hi folks. I have a windscreen mounted Navman. The power source is currently as supplied with the unit and is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket in the central console area. Ideally I would like to run a permanent wire to the Navman that its just lightly right of centre.

I thought about mounting high on windscreen and running a wire up the pillar and across the top but I find the signal is poorer there. Also, looking up to read and more dangerous than near the line of sight.

I was wondering if I can run a wire brough the small plastic bulb (not sure what to call it) on the RHS of the top of the dash. The thing I am referring to is like the alarm light on the LHS. I am not sure what this is used for right now. I am sick of a loose wire flopping around over the dash.

Q1 can I lift it out and run a wire through the dash?

Q2. has anyone come up with another solution?

    Thanks

I can't help with the hard wiring, but possibly another solution.
I have my Garmin in the bottom right of the windscreen. I run the cable down the side of the instrument binnacle, across the top of the steering column and down the RH side of the center dash and it cuts across the centre console to the 12V socket, ducking under the handbrake. I have used double sided take to hold it in position.
For the most part it is fairly unnoticeable.

You can see the cable in photo in my build thread. I think they are on pages 1 and 3 from memory.

That plastic bulb (if it is the same as the 120) is a sensor that feeds the climate control system. Once on a very hot day, I jumped into the car and placed my hat on the dash, covering the sensor. I then drove around wondering why the air-cond wouldn't set the fan to high. Moved the hat and voila! So I wouldn't touch it.

You might try pulling the wires through the windscreen vents. Some of the 120 owners fed their GPS antenna cables through it.

I have my GPS mounted in the bottom right corner of the windscreen, I then run the cable down behind the door rubber and in under the dash. Under the dash I have a cig lighter connection hard wired under the dash that I plug it into. The only wire you see it the little bit that runs from the door rubber across to the back of the GPS.

That is a brilliant idea Hutch.

Where did you take the power from for the cig lighter connection?

I have my sat nav mounted above the central air vents with the cable running down to a four socket extension that is fixed to the side of the centre console. The excess cable is looped inside some split loom tubing and then hooked under the centre console plastic to keep it pulled tight. The extension is plugged into the power socket at the moment but will be hard wired when I have sorted out a ceiling mount for my radio so I can put my switch box in radio's current position.
                    This works quite well.

Thanks for all the advice folks, particularly not drilling a hole in what I thought was just a spare bit plastic.

I have a double sig socket behind the dash wired directly to the 2nd battery. I can access it be removing the small panel on the side of the dash, pluged in the GPS and taped it up so it doesnt fall out. 1 socket for the GPS and 1 for the dash cam.

                          Cheers Yota,

I was considering that but my GPS turns on and off with the ignition and I would like to keep that.
I will have to find an ign/acc power source under the dash somewhere.

There is a wired up but unused plug behind the switch panel below the start button, it's taped back to the harness. Not sure what it is used for in other vehicles but pretty sure one of the wires would be ignition switched. This is where I pulled power for the dash lights of my contura rockers that are in the 3 switch blanks.

I have mine mounted on the side of the center pod.
Cable comes up between dash parts.
I had a 12v socket mounted under the dash powered from the cig lighter wiring.
