  • A stereo that will work with steering wheel controls?

    Hi all,

This is my first post - i've found this forum extremely useful to-date, but this is a question I have not found an answer to.

I've just bought a 2010 GXL and the stereo is not up to my usual standards as I have always had aftermarket units with subs. I love my music and whilst stuck in traffic, I really appreciate some lound and more importantly, clear, tunes.

Anyway, I'm hoping to find out if anyone has bought an after-market stereo that works with the existing steering wheel controls - audio and phone?

AND/OR, has anyone had any experience and success with adding a sub to the existing factory setup?

    Thanks in advance!

i had the same issue with my 2010 gxl, i didnt want to destroy the dash fitting an aftermarket unit and i also wanted the steering wheel controls.
i ended up installing a sub and amp to the factory unit, i got this

    https://www.jbhifionline.com.au/car-...p-combo/435920

i ran wires from the rear left and right door speakers to the amp in the rear under the 3rd row of seats, the amp has a "high" input setting on it so you can do this.
i used a 12v cigarette lighter plug for the power to the amp from my auxiliary battery socket in the back.
i set the amp to power on when it detects sound from the stereo, it has a switch for this on it.
i hooked the sub up in bridged mode on the amp and set the xover switch to low.

it sounds pretty good to me.

i have seen on ebay you can get aftermarket units for the 150 series, but i dont know if they work with the steering wheel and you will have to pull the dash apart to install it or get an installer to do it for you

I believe the Dig Options unit keeps steering wheel controls - but if I recall correctly not the phone controls.

Heard good reports about the Dig Options unit though.... this is the unit I will be looking at for replacing mine.

Toyota use a common steering wheel control protocol so most aftermarket head units can continue to work with these controls IF you use a Steering Wheel Interface. I'm using an Alpine Navigation head unit and also the Alpine SWC-C20 Interface which keeps all steering wheel control functions (including telephone answer/hang up) - Note, The voice control button no longer works but mutes the stereo instead.

Adding a sub and amp to the factory system is straight forward, buy an amp that has high level inputs and tap into existing speakers for the signal. For convenience, buy an amp with remote sub level control which will allow you to adjust the sub volume without affecting the speakers.

To "stooged", hardwire the amp straight to the battery +ve, and ground it near the amp. Using a 12V socket is a bad idea as they're only rated to 10 amps and your amplifier will likely draw a lot more than that. You'll cook your subwoofer and/or melt your socket/plug!

I'm about to fit a Parrot Asteriod Smart and have been told that I'll be able to keep the full steering controls. I'll be posting a report in how it goes.

Axxess from Metra makes modules that allow use of OEM steering wheel controls.
