  • Aftermarket Towbar

Has anyone had an aftermarket towbar and wiring loom fitted and had issues with the reverse sensors when a trailer is connected and you are reversing?

I'm getting a Wynnum tow bar fitted and considering getting Leo to fit a genuine factory loom.

Please let me know of your experiences.

    Cheers
    Bill

I haven't turned my sensors on since about a week after getting the car. But yes you have to turn them off when reversing with a trailer or it will beep its butt off. It doesn't matter what loom you have, the car doesn't recognise it's got a trailer on & can't tell the difference between the trailer or a brick wall.

I'm Melbourne based and looking at putting on a Haymen Reese towbar at Budget Towbars in East Kielor. $750 fitted with plug in ECU wiring loom, bar and ball. Has anyone had theirs done there or know off a better deal?

Had mine fitted by Allin Towbars in Adelaide. $560. They use genuine factory loom supplied by CMI Toyota. Have a 2012 Altitude & have never had any problems with rear beepers going off when trailer is on.

I just paid $550 for the Hayman Reece towbar, wiring loom, ECU, ball and tongue and fitted myself. Very easy. Works like a charm.

              Hey Winchy or others

What were the steps involved. eg remove rear bumper..etc

Did you get bolts with the bar to DIY?

Did you buy the ECU & install as well or did you have to hard wire. If you used the ECU was it an aftermarket or gen Toyota? Does it just plug into existing plugs??
              Thanks

I installed the Wynnum bar myself. No cutting or removing of the bumper at all (or cutting of the exhaust hanger as I understand the Hayman Reece requires). It does require drilling a couple of holes in the chassis rails however. Quality HT bolts supplied. Very neat fit & very happy. I installed the factory toyota loom/ECU (I think the ECU supplied by Toyota was actually Lumen branded or something like that). Also pretty easy (especially as I already had the LHS trim in the cargo area removed for other mods) though getting the grommets reinstalled was proving a little fiddly until I figured out the order of reinstalling them made all the difference and then it was a snap!

                Cheers,

                David.

Oh and yes the Toyota loom plugs into a single existing connector behind the LHS cargo trim just near the LHS tail lamp assembly.

                  Cheers,

                  David.

Hey all, I'm having dramas with my trailer plug on the car, I have tail lights but no indicators. Basically never worked from when I got it installed but never worried me, figured it was just a wire installed wrong, today I got around to going right over it. The relays in the back of my car (for the trailer harness are firing) but nothing is making it to the indicator plugs, I have brake nights and parkers, just no indicators.
I've read things saying about a fuse in the engine bay, does anyone know what fuse it is? Been through my whole fuse box and all fuses that are present are all ok.

For everyone out there here is the location of the said fuse in the engine bay, completely unmarked well not now......

The guys who did my tow bar never did this fuse. Not to sure if it should be 10 or 15 a will speak with Toyota tomorrow, but for the moment it has a 15a.
