  • Uniden UH7760NB or Oricom UHF280?

    Hi Guys,

Just after people's feedback on two UHFS I am looking at. The Uniden UH7760NB and the Oricom UHF280.

I like the LCD speaker/mic and both are well priced considering how often I would use it. I am looking at mounting either in the passengers foot well (behind the kick panel) or next to drivers left knee behind the plastics (hence LCD speaker mic). After any feedback on bar unit dimensions / mounting positions and any positives of negatives on unit operation etc.

Pics or links to installs are more than welcome!

    Cheers
    Kevin

Have had major dealings with both companies. I personally saw so many returns on faulty equipment with Oricom that I will no longer touch it. Thats my personal opinion only. Uniden would get my thumbs up everytime for a solid performer in the mainstream market.

        Hi RanJ

Thanks, exactly the sort of feedback I am after.

Does the Uniden pick up extra programmable channels?

              I don't believe so.

I tried to find out if the channels can be programmed but I had no luck.

              Cheers

Another one here with an Oricom. Absolute junk - you get what you pay for.

X 2. My second Uniden in 14 years. The first one still works, I just upgraded to the digital 80 channel. I like the remote mike and have tucked the unit under the drivers side centre console. I just pushed it up under the plastic so it's out of sight.

I have the Oricom UHF180. It works OK but when I'm on trips, I get some serious static interference noise. It appears to only happen in certain areas as on 2 occasions, once in Broken Hill and once near DeBortoli's where we had to drive past the same road, the interference would come on. The other handhelds in the rest of the convoy didn't hear anything. Strangely though, this doesn't happen around town.

Went in to see Electric Bug in Adelaide and they refuse to stock them due to the amount of returns.

I have the uniden unit, absolutely reliable, easy functions. I placed the box behind the air conditioning controls, heaps of space in there and the hand held speaker/mic works a treat.

                          Got any pics of install?

Any tips for when I finally undertake the work?

Strangely, I've just had the Uniden 7760NB installed in exactly the same place...but I paid someone as I'm time poor and not the most confident in electronics!! Not used it much but it ticked all boxes for me and the manual is not over the top. Appears a fantastic bit of kit with a speaker in the handheld mic and in the main unit. Old unit (40 Ch) was in the glove box and a pita to change anything. So glad I went this way as I like things (expensive electronics hidden away). Handheld speaker bung comes out of the middle Tojo blank button (above transfer box). Obviously they had to drill a hole but it was all well done and looks good. I fathomed a joist hanger which nicely holds the speaker/mic just above the steering wheel just like gramps:

Edit: I have an 120 series, I don't think the above method works on 150's as they have different trim round the consoles!? Just saying what I did!!

I added the extension from the main box to the handheld, this way you can mount the handheld anywhere and when not in use leave it unplugged in your glove box. There is enough length to let the kids in the back seats take over the communication department when we are on tour with family.

I enjoy listening to the city banter, beats talk-back radio so I mounted my speaker/mic on the light silver panel 3m double sided tape appears to be working for now .

Dissassembly of the centre console is easy as, follow the instructions in your owners manual.:-D
