  • aftermarket Sunroof on 2010 GRJ150R VX Sports Automatic

    Hi Guys,

I am buying one Prado 2010 GRJ150R VX Sports Automatic this week. (waiting for the final settlement and delivery)

Even though me and my wife are really mad about sunroof we compromised on a good condition VX which was got all other features other than sunroof (Kakadu is out of our budget..I tried a lot). I wanted to give a surprise for her when she comes back from home country by putting a after market sunroof.

The dealer was telling me it is not a good idea to put an aftermarket sunroof it may leak after few years.

Even I have seen the same comments from pradopoint and other sites..but couldn't find some from owners who are using those..

our usage will be very rare..will only use short trips around town..no offroad plans yet..

since we have new born babies (4 months old) will that be a problem for them? I am sure that they will enjoy once they are at least 2 years old.

Can you guys can recommend a good one if it is a good option to have. what should I consider selecting an aftermarket sunroof.

I am happy to go ahead if someone give 3 years warranty and will fix any issue come along. budget < $3K

Please provide some comments of prado owners with aftermarket sunroofs.

    Thanks

Have you thought about sourcing a factory one? All the mounts and wiring should already be there.

It may affect someone's opinion on resale if it is not genuine. Is a factory one an option?

I wouldnt do it either. From what I have seen it certainly wont add any resale value to the vehicle. There is a place called Hollandia sunroofs. They do a great job and are really great quality BUT again personal choice I wouldn't have one. I had a factory roof in my grande and hardly used it (again Im not a sunroof fan) I just think that it is some thing else to go wrong with the vehicle and especially when they age. I personally wont buy a vehicle with an after market roof. This is the mob holden use to use (may still do ??) for all their roofs even there HSV range as my cousin did http://www.webasto.com.au/home/ena/html/8212.html At the end of the day its up to you. If its some thing you really want then go for it, just remember when selling again it wont add any value, some people who don't know their vehicles wouldn't even know its not genuine unless you told them, up to them to ask if they think of it......Just to note, my cousins holden is a 2004 model and hasn't had one issue with the roof and they don't really look after their vehicles that well but it is garaged........Cheers Steve I should mention that holden don't fit factory sunroofs or didn't back then anyway

We just picked up our 2013 Altitude on the weekend. We certainly didn't buy the car for the sunroof, and when the salesman told me that it added value, I replied with "only if you want one... & I don't" I can't see us using the sunroof very much, the kids think it is a novelty, but after the novelty wears off, I suspect we will hardly ever use it.

The quality aftermarket ones that I have seen are as good as the factory ones.

I think they are more suited to the European climate and we don't use the one on our other car, but if it's important to your wife then why not?

You should definitely be able to get one for 3k, just make sure that you go to a specialist installer who does only /or a lot of sun roofs.

I don't know how can I fit factory one..it is an 3.5 years old vehicle. My current dealer told that they won't do it. Even he tried to convince no to do it.

Thanks guys for all your comments.

Regarding resale value, I am not planning to sell this car for another 10 years unless and until some major issue.
By that time anyway the resale value will be very less I guess.

Based on your suggestions I have decided to hold my plans.. once the excitement of the new car is finished then we will think again..may be after few years..

I will go with a Toyota factory one if someone does now..Don't know whom to ask.

The factory sunroof needs a new roof lining which reduces head room. You would need a new switch cluster near the map lights to open and close the sunroof. The roof skin is folded in to form the hole for the sunroof. There may or may not be structural framework you need to cut into which would weaken the roof structure. I would leave the roof alone.

Agree with amts, it would be virtually impossible to fit a factory roof. As amts said look at the finish on the factory sunroof compared to after market. Genuine as amts has said is folded from the factory, aftermarket have a black trim around them. Like I mentioned before Holden sunroofs have a black trim around them that's because they are all put in after the vehicle is built..... Cheers Steve
