  • Front Recovery Points

    Hi everyone

New member looking for a straight answer, I have looked through the recovery point threads and they seem to go round and round with out a deffinate answer. Can someone help me with front recovery kit for 150 prado with a tjm bullbar fitted and where to buy please?

Also if your feeling help full, i want some lift and the rear end a bit stiffer because when I put the camper on the back she drops a good 3 inches or more, whats the best value for money shock and spring upgrade/lift? preferably drive in drive out Im not brave enough to fit myself.

    Regards
    Draino

I have TJM gold all round medium rating on my 120 and wish I had stuck to OME which I had on previous two prados. At first I thought it was ok but now I reckon too soft and drops in the arse a lot more then the OME did with same loads. I could load up chockers with OME and would sit spot on not nose up like it does with TJM, I will require bags in the rear now to level up when loaded. Mine is a 120 though not a 150 so may be some difference with the 150's. As far as recovery points I am in the process of finishing a accredited 4wd course (good for Australia wide) and I have been using my 120 with the hooks from the factory on the front (which most refer to as tie downs only) and I questioned this before I commenced training that I only have these and he said they were fine don't need to waste money on the other type that company's want to try and flog off to you. BUT in saying that some 4wd clubs etc won't accept these as recovery points ?? Upto who ever is going to pull you out I suppose and/or club rules. Again this is on my 120 not 150.... Cheers Steve

Cheers Steve , ome were high on the list so I think I will just run with that I don't want it all to get to technical just need clearance for a few river crossings out Weeli Wolli and it will drag its ass big time as it is.

I'm cool with using the stock tie downs for he amount of times I'm really going to need to be recovered will be minimal fingers crossed, I see some people use an equaliser strap but what the heck is that? I'm guessing maybe a suckle on each point with a short strap between them, then attach alonger strap of the middle of that to the car pulling you out! But who knows?

""I see some people use an equaliser strap but what the heck is that"".... I use one of these which is actually a tree trunk protector but I also use as an equaliser strap as well. I was told when doing the course it saves you having to cart around two different straps so can be used for both (mind you I don't have a winch anyway). I then attach the snatch strap to it. Im not sure how correct it is but the trainers in the course that I'm doing said all vehicles with full chassis as like the prados, patrols, any thing with chassis rails should use the strap so you don't twist the chassis when doing recovery's using the snatch strap. Now as I said im not sure if this is 100% correct or not but I have used it on mine so as to avoid any possible damage.....Cheers Steve [IMG][/IMG]

            Equaliser strap

I recently attended an approved off road course. I also bought the same tree protector strap but was advised that this is not suitable for using as an equaliser strap If you read the manufactures label it advises so.

Nothing written on my packaging or the label mentioning that ?? Mine is from ARB and the sales person said it was actually over kill using as a equaliser strap but would serve the purpose for both. Not sure why it wouldn't.....Cheers Steve

Ok fodbin, I'll have to eat my words on this one, as you said here it is on my tag !!! I will be going and speaking to ARB on Monday as I'm never going to use this as a winch strap as I don't have a winch and don't intend on having one but they did tell me when I purchased this that it could be used as an equaliser.... http://www.toughtoys.com.au/4wd-reco...alizer-straps/ bit of reading. From what I have just been reading doesn't seem to be any major issues using a TTP as a bridle/equaliser strap.......Cheers Steve

I think you have got the interpretation on the label wrong, yes don't use the tree trunk as a snatching devise, but that's not what you are using it for when used as an equaliser, the snatch strap is still doing the snatching, the tree trunk protector is just used as a joiner.

When we train people in recoveries we recommend using a tree trunk protector as a bridle.

Draino, I don't want to get into a debate about recovery points again, what I will say is this. If you don't know what a bridle is, and you don't know how to set it up then you should not even be thinking about snatch recoveries. They are likely the most dangerous thing you will do in your 4wd. People can and do DIE during incorrectly executed snatch recoveries. If you are not 100% sure on how to do this safely then the internet is not the place to learn, join a 4wd club or find someone that can give expert qualified advice on how to do this safely.

Don't get someone who has not had specific recent training to give you the good oil, I see people giving really bad recovery advise on forums all the time, and its even worse when you go to a hot spot for people getting bogged, most people have no clue whatsoever and put theirs and other people lives in danger with unsafe recoveries.

one last word on recovery points, it really doesn't matter what you or I or anyone else thinks is a suitable recovery point, the only opinion that matters is that of the person going to pull you out, if that person was me I would not snatch you off your factory tie down points.

                          Cheers Andrew

So going by your comments AJ this TTP would be fine to use as a bridle/equaliser strap...... Cheers Steve
