  • Bullbar & suspension

Hi guys, just wondering if you have to strengthen the front suspension if fitting arb bar with a winch. Any comments. Would be appreciated.

depends on what suspension you have to start with.. what model car you have?
ive got a TJM alloy Bar with wench and ive added a second battery..
i have the kakadu model and have KDSS.. and i find i have a slight lean due to the extra weight... ive been reasearching for a while now on wha to do and how to fix it.... a suspension upgrade can fix this and give my car a lift at the same time... which in my particular model will cause me to loose some suspension settings... hope it helps

You don't have to lose the in-cabin settings if you just change the springs Alex, that's what I did on my Kakadu. I have a TJM bar not an ARB one but it doesn't really matter if they are both steel. Even before my winch went in the Kaka was nose down on the factory springs, the previous owner didn't change the springs when he put the bar on. With a bit of fiddling you can reduce the KDSS lean but at least in my case there is still a slight lean, it's just not as bad as it was on the factory springs.

true if you just change the springs - fido666
but i was more talking about giving a real raise of 2" inch - springs and shocks... kill 2 birds with one stone sort of thing

By the Way Melbourne Prodopoint members!!... I did find a place that does this! Opposite Lock in South Dandenong - for around $2400.00 you can get your Kakadu Raised 2"inchs.. the replace the rear air bags with bigger ones and replace the front spirngs and shocks

But I did end up with a lift as well Alex. Heights for the front before were 760mm (L) and 745mm (R), after they were 825mm (L) and 810mm (R). That's a 65mm lift at the front however some of that was just getting back what was lost when the bullbar went on.

At the rear after an airbag sensor tweak a month later I went from 805mm (L) to to 845mm (L) and from 773mm (R) to 823mm (R) on the "M" setting. The "N" position measure was around 810mm.

Perhaps when the shocks get a bit more mileage on them I'll swap them out for aftermarket ones.

I have an ARB bar with dual batteries with the standard suspension. I would say my standard suspension is ok with this setup, but I think there would be too much wallowing and diving going on if I also had a winch up front.

hi so are you saying that you have the adjustable switch for the suspension and you had a lift and still are able to use this switch
                or have I missed something

Yes correct, I still have the "sport" and "comfort" adjustable valving with the Toyota TEMS shocks.

I have been through incremental changes to suspension after fitting bullbar, winch and second battery. To cut a long story short: I am very happy with clearance (45mm lift), and the way the car now handles, particularly cornering at highway speed. The extra weight compromised the ground clearance and the handling. Now, given it's a 2.5 ton vehicle, the handling is great and feels a lot safer than with the Toyo shockies. Set up: Dobinson's springs in the front, Bilstein shockies (the German version not US) from Cal Offroad, spacers in the back to adjust the height of the airsuspension. Happy as Larry.

TJM T13 bar, TJM 9500lb winch, FJ Cruiser 17" rims with 265/70R17 Coopers S/T maxx, 40mm lift, Dobinson's C59-726, Bilstein shocks, Airtek snorkel, Recovery points, Brown Davies bash plates, TG150 transfer case guard. Rhino Pioneer Platform SuperPeg Rear Awning. Drifta Drawer System, Cargobarrier. Optima dual battery. GME UHF, Sandgrabbas.. ARB 47l fridge freezer.

Sydney did you get someone to fit all of this or Did you do yourself. I have just come back from Fraser and wasn't happy with the floaty front end. And the kids were complaining from how the backed was sloppy. He tracks were wheel size wallows like big coragations and the front was bottoming out quite a lot and just felt quite loose. I had tough dogs on the 120 and they handle much better. I am thinking I might just replace front springs first to see if it stiffens the front up. Also trying to think about what to do with the lean now it looks like its 25 or more to the drivers side.
