The GX/GXL has the cheaper version of the DRL (it is not LED DRL). You can't turn this so called parking lights off by just using the headlight switch it stays on when the engine is on, the lighting system is a stupid design. The only way you can turn all your lights off is when you press the stop button and you switch the headlight switch to off.
If you guys got any ideas on how to turn the "DRL" off on the new Prado please let me know.

To answer my own question, the GXL doesn't have DRLs but always on headlights, the small tear drops are just parkers, and the low beams come on full brightness both day and night. You have to turn the knob to on to light up the remaining dash lights in the cab.

DRL is just another fancy name for lights that's turned on during the day hence the reason why they are called daytime running lights, these parkers(?) on the GX/L can't be turned off. The VX/ Kakadu has 4 x LED DRLs (each side) and the GX/L has 1 x halogen light (should we call it parkers because it's only got a 1 x globe or pretend DRL?), both does the same thing it is on continuously when you are driving and the only difference is... is the price tag.

Not correct. The parkers on the GXL are not the DRL, while the VX/Kakadu has the 4 LEDs in this spot for the DRL the GXL uses the low beam headlight for the DRL not the parkers. The parkers are not a halogen bulb, just a normal small incadecent bulb and they can be turned off, the parkers don't come on unless you turn them on, in fact by puting the parkers on is the only way to turn the headlights off but it dims the LCD screen so much you can't see it during the day.

My apologies for calling it halogen globe.

You could have given a positive reply on how to turn these lights off instead of pouncing at me like an angry tiger, are you a VX/Kakadu owner?

You have mentioned that the small incandescent bulb can be turned off and you then mentioned that these parkers don't come on unless you turn them on, in addition you said that the only way to turn the headlights off is by putting the parkers on or is that the other way around (only way to turn the parkers off is to turn the headlights on). When it is a hot sunny clear day and you are driving around, how do you turn these parkers off without turning the headlights on or taking the bulb out?

The world is evolving, with the car markets terms such as DRLs will be used more often as a selling point. In some cars when you turn the pakers on (can also be turned off) the tail lights will also come on, when you are driving or have your car turned on in the new GXL the parkers are on and the tail lights aren't unless you have your headlights on (this is where the low beam comes in unless you have it set at high beam), the car turned off or the headlights switch is off.

Call me old fashion but I thought parkers are a term that we use as parking lights and not low beam driving lights. Why would I have my parkers on if I was to drive during a hot clear sunny day. If these parkers can not be turned off during the day (no lights at all) and I am driving would it be a safe bet that it's probably in the same category as the daytime running lights without the price tag and the LED? LOL!

I like the VX and the Kakadu but I can not justify doing some serious 4x4 and camping with leather seats and the luxurious feel inside the cabin, in saying that I am currently treating my GXL like a 2 weeks old Click image for larger version

Sorry didn't mean to sound angry and as far as I know there is no solution to turn them off so nothing positive to add in that respect.
I've got a GXL, the way I read your description was the single small parking light was the GXL version of the DRL but it's not, the parking light functions like a normal parking light and can be turned on and off with the switch. With the engine on the headlights come with the switch in the off position but if you turn the Parkers on the headlights turn off but as I said it dims the LCD screen too much.

Yes I know as with my first few thread the Prado has a weird lighting control system, check out the manual in relation to wether or not DRL are fitted in the car. I don't know if my interpretation is correct but the car that we drive has DRL fitted, their are two types, one has halogen and the other has led and both does the same job with just different price tag.

ARB I say well done on the design, I like it. All the bullbars that show the DRL's look horrible. Well done I say!

My parkers and low beams are on all the time, at night I turn on the lights with the switch and the low beams turn off first as I cycle through parker mode, then come on again when I cycle to head light on mode, the only thing that changes is the remaining dash lights come on, and the always on dash lights and LCD screen dim.

The parkers NEVER turn off ever. Unless the engine is off.
