  • Hema Navigator VS iPad & Hema App ??

Fellow PP'rs, seeking feedback from those using an iPad with the Hema maps package ?? - I'm weighing up the cost of buying a Hema HN6 versus an iPad (and download the Hema package)....Obviously the iPad is larger, more versatile and can be used for other things...Just not sure which version of iPad I would need (basic one or with 3G, 4G coverage, etc)...And how's the reliability of the Hema map pack ??

    Appreciate your feedback on either...

    Cheers

You need the 3G one because it has the built in gps the wifi one does not, it works for me but I also use wiki camps on it to.

As Disco said you will want the 3G version or you will need to hook up an external GPS reciever. Personally I love the Ipad with the Hema, it's so versatile and the big screen is a huge bonus. One of the best moves I ever made.

I agree with AJ. I have the Hema 4wd maps and Hema Explorer on my iPad. Both are great but I use the cheaper explorer one more as it has built in poi's both have been updated recently and the 4wd app added an extra 20 odd maps for free and updated 40 or so others. Good value and yeah you can use the iPad for so much more too. Like I am on here right now

I reckon I might lash out on that before the next big trip, I hear good things about it.

I also got Wiki Camps the other day, $5 and Its already paid for its self finding me an alternate camp spot for a trip I am planning.

I also have Mudmaps and Mudmaps 2 on my Ipad, if you don't have them then save your money and don't bother as they are rubbish compared to Hema, however every once in a blue moon they do show a small tidbit of info not on Hema that helps.

Also since I got the Ipad I never watch adds on TV anymore, laptop stays in the office but the Ipad is so portable.

          Cheers Andrew

I'm a big fan of multipurpose devices. I think the iPad will get more use and you can use other things with it. Standalone nav devices are dying IMO.

I actually use my iPhone as a navigator. Its not too bad, and doesn't take up too much space. I've got the free 'Memory map' software with Hema Maps uploaded. Licenced to 2 PC's and 2 mobile devices including SD cards. Licences are transferrable to other devices.

This means I can have the same map on my iPhone and my Laptop at home. Only downside is that the iDevice has to have internet access to download the maps for memory map. So you have to pre-download an area or routes your are visiting if you are going to areas withouth Data coverage. But I can do the planning and route Waypoints etc on the laptop and transfer to the mobile.

It also has the full NSW topo maps downloaded as well - 1:25k, 1:50k and 1:100k scale

It also has the wikicamps app

Much more versatile than the navigator alone.

I am sure my set up is overkill. I have the Navman MyEscape 11 navigator with the Hema 4WD tracks, an iPad 3 both Hema Maps and Mud Maps as well as wiki camps. Must sya I like the iPad with Hema maps as it can live track and then save trips - stores a fair no of trip parameters.

I can actually give you a HN6 to iPad comparison, dad has a HN6 that I used to use until I got my iPad. The HN6 has the camps info in it, which is really good, and is also smaller and more stable stuck on the windscreen (could be my iPad mount but it shakes and vibrates a lot). The iPad app is actually quicker though, I have found that the HN6 lags a bit sometimes, it has been back to hema 5 or 6 time for this problem. Over all I actually prefer the iPad for many reasons, clearer screen, multi purposes, better map viewing ability (if you want to scroll across and see whats coming up, etc). I'll be investing in a new mount for the iPad to hopefully help combat the shakes it gets, then it should all be good. If I had my time again I would actually get an iPad mini though, bit smaller means less of your windscreen/dash taken up and hopefully less weight would mean less shakes.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 7" Tab. If you want to reduce upfront costs, Android tablets are the way to go (if you wish to consider it). There are several free map apps like Androzic and Memory Map. Then all you need is to get the maps.

I'm sure I've seen an iPad mounted by velcro to a dashmat, folded over and sitting in front of the top air vents/temperature screen in the 150 ? Anyone have photos of this? or can direct me to a fellow PP'rs 150 build where they've mounted it this way?? Cheers

Google nexus 7 has gps as standard for far less the cost of an iPad Mini.

Well there you go, I am an iSheep though, the Mrs is a teacher and head of IT at her Mac based school, so kinda just got told an iPad will do what you want it to do, here. The place where I have seen the iPad mounted in the 150 won't work as well in the facelift, would cover half the radio. Thinking quality suction mount to windscreen just above said vents.

I have a iPad mini, its a very convenient size and has all the benefits of an iPad/ tablet with a great camera. I have both Mud Map2 and the Hema App. Both apps are very good with good general maps. I needed good quality 25k topo maps and found http://www.gpsoz.com.au/ozraster/index.htm to be the most detailed and they can provide them on a usb stick in most formats.

If you wait you can often get iTunes cards for 20-25% off on sale. My local Coles had 25% off, it really dropped the price of the apps.

I mounted my iPad with a RAM mount on the Right side of my steering wheel, great spot as it is easy to see and doesn't obstruct vision. Its also easy to operate whilst on the move.

Ram mounts are the way to go. I have one in my Hiace to have run sheets on whilst working. Just need to get one in the Prado now. And figure out where to put it.
