  • TJM bar - rusty bash plate and loose bolt

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a rusty patch on the centre bash plate under the TJM steel bar, so crawled under to notice many rust spots. Unbolted the plate and about 10% of both surfaces and the edges were blistering, and had been for some time by the amount of rust depth.

I was going to rust proof the plate, but instead took it to the installer, TJM at Carlton. The guys there phoned TJM head office, and a reply after a few days was that the bar was now out of warranty (over 3 years since the install), and head office would not replace it. So rust proofed the plate and was going to re-paint it, then a couple of days later again, TJM head office called TJM Carlton and offered to send up a replacement plate for me, so just picked it up.

Whilst I was under the Prado, I removed the side bash plates under the bar (no rust on them) and checked the mounting bolts of the bar. Found that a bolt either side was loose. On one side, the side bracket had a loose bolt (6 turns to tighten) and on the other side on the front mounting bracket, another loose bolt (2 turns to tighten) The guys at TJM Carlton told me that head office does not specify the fitting of spring washers to the mounting bolts.

Might be an idea to check your mounting bolts.

I had the same issue with the center bash plate on my TJM bar Yowie, TJM have replaced it for me but I still need to go and pick it up. Have to say I'm very happy with the service from TJM so far.

Front lip of my bash plate under my bar has had the powder coating chip/flake away completely. Was sent away for re-treatment under warranty but has just done it all over again. Bad luck? Perhaps. Would have been better off painting it instead of rolling with a baked-on powder coat. :/

Never had this problem with my bash plates by Brown Davis. I transferred from one prado 95 to the other, was still no rust spots or any thing when I sold the plate separately after I had sold the prado....and it had the usual scrapes etc like probably every body else's .......Cheers Steve

I have spring washers on mine, and I painted the heads of the bolts with black rust converter to keep them clean. Can't see how not having spring washers would prevent the bolts coming loose.
