  • Is upgrading suspension a must after fitting a bullbar?

Thinking of getting the TJM T13 bullbar on my GXL facelift, I've read that the weight on the front end will affect performance etc,
    A)but in what way?
B)If so, is upgrading suspension a must?
    C)What suspension upgrades are required?

    Thanks in advance.

    A. It will be softer & more bounce & lower, risk of hitting bump stops a lot. Worse as it gets older.
    B. no Plenty ppl don't. I'd advise it.
    C. Front coils only required if you are not lifting it as well. Struts also if you have corrugated or rough roads.

If bullbar fitted and no changes made to suspension, springs start sagging and shocks will not cope with the extra weight bouncing around.
In most cases, a slightly heavier spring is fitted to bring the front back up close to original level.
A stock shock may not be stiff enough to control the spring and cause pitching/yawing and bouncy ride.

Ideally upgraded suspension is used, springs and shocks would be the best option. Some people just replace springs which is a bit cheaper. I have also seen a small strut top spacer used to bring it back up, which is even cheaper again. Some people just leave it and it doesn't really bother them. If dollars were a big concern I would throw a 6mm strut top spacer in to get me through until I could afford new springs and shocks.

Has any one fitted the 30mm lift that OME and king springs offer? That would be ideal.

tough question. Not sure on Sri Lankan pricing. Wouldn't want to scare or dishearten you with prices.

Best to ask around and get quotes.

Short answer on price. You can get a 30-50mm lift via a 4x4 shop for about $1600-1800 (Tough Dog, OME etc) or go to a suspension specialist and get something like Bilstien/Dobson for about $ 2,200. Some swear by King's and Koni's. Add another $500 if you want rear airbags included (to level the load if required).
Personally I recommend going to a dedicated and reputable suspension joint, but it depends on what you can spend.

                    Hi,

I fitted OME 30mm after putting their steel bar and winch on. Before the suspension is wallowed a lot and change of direction was terrible, with the suspension upgrade it has made it fun to drive again and i feel I have much better control especially at speed on big sweeping corners.

                    Cheers

When you option the Toyota genuine bullbar do they upgrade the suspension?
From my understanding the standard alloy is ~50kg? and the steel ARB Deluxe ~70kg? (let me know if that's not correct) but from my reasoning if they don't upgrade the suspension when you option the alloy, the extra few KG from a steel isn't going to make a massive difference.

I've got an ARB Deluxe winch fitted, stock susp and haven't really felt the need to upgrade. Gone 4X4ing with a 120 and a Pajero both with alloy bars, even when they had a close call i was clearing or or getting just as close.
However, if you go the steel bar, add a duel battery and some spotties, maybe your getting into the zone of looking for a susp upgrade because it all adds up. A winch would most certainly make you want an upgrade.

Plenty of farmers buy steel bullbars for varying vehicles, almost none of them upgrade suspension.

                          Cheers Andrew
