  • Icom IC-440n or IC-450n

Does anyone have any experience with the Icom IC-450n? I have been set on a 440n for a while now, but just saw the 450n that seems like it was released earlier this month. I was going to head to Prestige to ask them what's it like. However, thought I would check in here to see if anyone has any thoughts on it.

Both units cost about the same (385 for 450n and 375 for 440n on Prestige - can get each a bit cheaper on Ebay), so that doesn't really come into the equation.

No personal experience with either of these units (use heaps of Icom Aviation gear though) but as the 450 is the update of the 440, I'd go with that. Looks like the big difference is the hand piece - new design looks more ergonomic and easier to use.
Wish List: Late 120 series or 150 series V6 preferably manual, the funds to buy said vehicle

Current ride: MY2002 Mits. Pajero V6 manual With a couple of bits and pieces

Ah, nice, thanks for the link. How long to you get it installed? Wouldn't mind the good word once it's in.

Have been using 440 for 12 months including 2 major trips, great unit and 450 looks improved. This base unit will fit inside the "sandwich" front wall of central console bin easily for an out of sight install and simply plug in hand set to control when you need it. If you have second aux battery wire it into that so that it can be left on when you want it, very handy in camp!

            Yes it arrived
But I can't fit it till Wednesday
Plug on the end of the Ariel is the small version so it will poke through the firewall bung easy

Here it is! I must say it's quite a nice UHF as far as UHF's go. Having owned an Icom IC-400pro previously, I would have to say most of the features you could only every program via the software, is now programmable via the menu on the hand piece. I mounted the hand piece on a "ClicOn" mount from www.holdmyphone.com.au.

Was this the mount you got?

It's not cheap! However looks like you don't need to drill, so pays for itself in resale I guess...

Yeah that's the one. Not cheap, but yes, there are no screws at all, and it simply clips into place and is still quite sturdy.

I bought the 450 today to replace my 440 for two reasons, the main one being the handset controls for the volume and channel were on a toggle on the 440, I.e the up/down buttons were shared between the volume and channel change, drove me nuts and was a little dangerous looking down to make sure you were in the right mode. The controls have been separated on the 450. The second and not really a strong reason was the 80 channels.

Anyone want to make an offer on the 440?
