  • Where have you mounted a uhf on a 2014/5 Prado

Just wondering where people have mounted a UHF radio in the face lifted 150 Prado, photos would be great and also the model of the radio.

I have a GX on order and just trying to work out where to mount one, as there are a few options.

    1) Roof console and a DIN size UHF radio, already have one if I remove it form existing 4wd, but need the roof console.
    2) Remote head unit, but where is the best spot for the remote head and hand piece.
    3) Remote unit with all the controls in the hand piece, but where to mount the hand piece.

I also need to help a friend out and fit one in there GXL Prado, but they don;t want the roof console, as they use the mirror on the sunglasses holder, so need to be a remote unit.

So any suggestions and photos would be great.

If you do a search there's plenty of suggestions on here already. Just do a Google search with "site: pradopoint.com" tacked on the end.

I myself have installed mine on the shelf under the glovebox with the mike connector on the side of the console next to driver's left knee. I'll find a link to my install thread and post back.

Then put the mic mount on one of these (if you go with option 3):

Here's a link to the UHF install on my 150, pre-facelift but doubt the layout is any different for this purpose :-

          Kenny,

Thanks that is a good idea for mounting the hand piece.

Fido, I did do a search but it did gave to many old posts. There is a few differences in the dash layout with the face lift model, as where the radio was is now a storage box with a flip up cover. So could be a good option for putting the radio as well.

On my facelift I used a all on mic style uhf and put the body up under the dash above the glovebox. The hole to plug the mic into is cut into a blank off switch and looks very neat. I don't mount the mic anywhere, just put it in the square change and rubbish holder thing when it's plugged in. I usually have it unplugged and hiding in the centre console though

              AussieAndy,

Is the volume of the radio loud enough when mounted under the glove box or would a remote speaker also be beneficial?

Volume is just loud enough for me. If I was to do it again I would fit an extension speaker in the centre speaker location, behind the centre air vents in the top of the dash. All hidden away with no one any wiser. In fact it's on my to do list when I get back from the Cape.

With my radio it's plenty loud enough but I have it below the glovebox (still hidden behind the plastic panel). I have a Uniden UH7760NB with all the controls on the mike whicj also has a speaker built in.

                    LINK: Previous post

Unit installed under passenger seat and the handset connection in a blank switch in front of console. Don't use the CB every day but can pull the handset out of the console and connect in around 5 seconds. Then its all nice and tidy when im just daily driving.

                      Mine's in the centre console.
I dont have a remote head, so all the controls are in the console. Sound is loud enough to hear through theclosed console lid.

I have used an extension for the microphone to plug into the centre console near the 12V socket.

Please keep them coming as the more ideas I have the more options I have to think about.

Just got a quote from Electric Bug in Adelaide, they are regarded as probably the best retail supplier & fitter in Adelaide. Supply and install new Icom 450n with short and long aerials .. $750. Their install looked pretty straightforward (showed me pictures in an album). Power from starter battery pass through grommet on lhs firewall to main unit in or Under glovebox ( couldn't see from photos ). Microphone installed on fascia as in Kenny 5000 post above (no drilling, no holes). They convinced me that bull bar aerial is good for posers but best and easiest fit is to run cable along top of door/body in the channel (easy to pull out and hides cable) and come out on front roof rail bracket. aerial is a small flexible one (about 150mm) so no problem in car parks. aerial cable passes out back of unit through same grommet above. From what I've read and consistent with what they told me, best reception if aerial is up high like this with roof acting as ground plane. You don't need a big poser aerial if you want something really effective. Also had photo of connection to a Rhino platform. Just has a connector off the roof rail bracket to the platform on a bracket. Means you can still operate with or without the platform.

Looked so simple that I couldn't work out why it should cost so much to install. Considering having a try myself.

Anybody got ideas how they may have mounted in glovebox?

Call me a poser but I like my Aerial on the bull bar. My 6dB whip doubles as a height guage to tell me if ill fit into a low clearance structure.

Where and how will it be mounted?

If it is about 150 mm it is a 1/4 wave antenna such as http://www.rfiwireless.com.au/media/...0553-1-sw7.pdf

The mount is a hole in the middle of the roof with the coax feed from underneath.

Is that what you are proposing?
