  • Aerial and Sand Flag placement....

    Hi,

Dont ask - but I dont have a bull bar on my 2010 Prado 150.

I'm about to order a UHF (icom 450) and have 3 questions for the Prado Point masters....

    1) Whats the best aerial I can get (under $100) that can be fender mounted? Im looking at the AE4018K1/K2

    2) What are the options for mounting the aerial? - I'm assuming (maybe I shouldnt do that ) the fender mount is my only option...? I've looked and the spacing in the bonnet and it is pretty darn tight to have something sticking up

    3) Where on earth can I mount a Sand Flag?

    I do have Rola Roof racks - RBXL158 .

Any ideas would be great... thanks!

Antennae - roof, fender, rear wheel
eg: Have you got an awning? http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ckdown-feature
Or this: a kaymar rear wheel mount

ok - I saw the Kaymar - was hoping there might be a bracket solution for the front of the car somewhere, through the grill perhaps. The rear wheel might be my last resort.

I dont have an awning - just the roof racks and a Rhino Rack 440.

Is there a solution for the Sand Flag using the Rola Roof Racks or the existing Roof Rails?

You could use something like this to mount to the front.

and there are roof rack aerial mount kits, just not sure about for Rola. If you're handy you could knock your own up.

Thanks, both are good solutions - I found similiar connectors for the Rola - hopefully the aerial i choose will work and not put too much stress on the Rola Rack.

I assume putting the sand flag as far forward as possible is best ... and aerial as high as possible...

Any thoughts on the choice of aerial?

For the aerial I would look at the ae4701 ($88 from prestige communications) or 4702. they come in black which also looks good. 4704 is the really heavy duty version.

I have my sand flag mounted in the front corner of my roof rack, its a custom mount but not overly difficult for anyone to do similar.

              Works well I think.

              Cheers Andrew

Thanks all for your posts and ideas.

Maybe I'm over thinking the amt of stress the sand flag will cause on the attachment to the car? I had a look at the number plate holder and the bolts just go into the fibreglass bumper with lots of flex and no steel support.

Going to see if I can fashion something into the Rhino Rack....

If the aerial goes on the roof there is less vibration than the bullbar, can get away without massive heavy duty. I have GME AE409L 6/9db with a stubby 3db rubber ducky which I am going to mount on the roof. I have seen them mounted into the gutter. I haven't got to investigating it fully yet, but hopefully I can get a bracket in front of the factory rails.

                  Cheers, Nova

I didnt know you could do that ... i just had a look and indeed there is a gutter... is there such a thing as a "gutter mount" for the Prado 150 for an aerial?

Cheap way is piece of electrical conduit race taped to the bulbar or as I did an old folding tent pole out of a dome tent doubled up and race taped at the joins and to the bulbar, Mine did the Simpson Desert twice, you just need to ensure the flag meets the regulations.

I used a fishing rod taped to the bullbar

Mine mounted on the roof is an old UHF aerial with some PVC conduit to make it a bit longer, I had it all lying around so cost nothing.

I was hoping to run the cable up the windscreen, under the plastic cover and make a mount from one of the roof rail feet for the aerial. When I get to needing a sand flag, that will be on one of amts's knockdown brackets on the roof rack or awning.

                            Cheers,

                              Hi Andrew,
What are you using for your sand flag? Looks like it would need to be pretty slim to fit in your rack mount?
