  • Bogout

I came across a recovery device called Bogout on the Freerangecamping site.

    http://www.bogout.com/

Has anyone seen or tried it?

Without a diff lock I would think you would need one on both ends of an axle if you were significantly bogged.

If it works it seems it would be better than a winch if you only wanted to pull in the direction of the wheels both forwards and backwards and you don't need a suspension upgrade to carry it.

    Cheers,

It looks like a good idea, but would be interesting to see how useful it is in the real world. I think its a good call on the diff lock or needing 2 of them.

      Bogout

Saw them demo'd at an outdoor show earlier this year. I recall they come in pairs. The idea looked good, not too sure how they would go if you were seriously bogged.
They are lighter and easier to pack then Maxtrax but you need something to attach the anchor end to so if you are bogged on an outback road or a beach with no trees its going to be hard work.

There is no one size fits all.

Winches are great if you want to pull yourself forward and are pretty good at pulling you back on line if, as you say, you have an anchor.

I watch a noddy get himself deliberately bogged in mud a few months ago so he could show of his new MaxTrax or maybe they were imitation Maxtrax. He did the right thing according to the instructions and drove out backwards over the Trax. As soon as he drove off the plastic he spun his wheels in the mud and went back down to the doorsills but this time trapping his Maxtrax under the car. Oops.

I go to the shows and watch all sorts of things being demonstrated by people who are paid to make products look good.

I am looking forward to see how these perform in the real world.

I seen them at the Sydney caravan show.
Funny they didn't make an appearance at the Sydney 4wd adventure show.
          I agree previous comments.
Lets see if someone uses them and how they go.

They are very similar to what the Army had on all their trucks and Austin Champs and early Land Rovers in the 60s.

I saw them demonstrated then and was not impressed when a steel cable let go on a bogged 6X6.

At least the safety rules back then meant everyone was safe.

The bogout is different because it is wrapped around the tyre rather than a much smaller diameter drum. It is essentially the same force on everything as if you had traction and just drove out. It is really no different to the traction and therefore the forces you get with Maxtrax. (I put my flame suit on here because I am sure someone will prove me wrong and have 6x4 photos with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back to prove it).

I think you are right. The only concern is not reversing straight so the 'ladder' comes off the tyre. Oh and the points about a suitable anchor, etc. this system would work in both forwards and reverse so maybe a good back up if you travel alone.

The anchor point needs to be in line with the tyre for this thing to work. Then you need to jack the tyre off the ground to unwrap it. Sounds like hard work to me.

At $279 a pair...they are up there in the MaxTrax price range and I'm not sure they are a better option (they certainly seem like more effort is required to use them)...happy to be proven wrong though.
