  • Headlamp protector for faclift prados with LED lights

    Hey Guys,

Any ideas as to why the Toyota head lamp protectors are not suitable for the face-lift Prados with led headlights.
I thought the the headlights on the VX and Kaka would be worth protecting more so that the non LED models.

What makes you think they're not suitable? I have the headlight protectors on my VX 2014 model from Toyota with no issues.

    Regards
    Zak

Thats because i went to the sprare parts dept at my toyota dealer and was told that its not suitable for the vx and kakadu when he looked it up on the system. In addition if you go the toyota website apprently the headlamp covers do not come up as an option when you select vx or kaka. Strange...Anyway it works ill buy some asap...

Head lamp covers are a wank, the polycarbonate headlamp it self is stronger by a factor of a 100 compared to the wallet lightening accessories.

Anyone who buys them are a sucker for marketing much like 'paint and rust protection'.

Maybe a wank, but I got mine for free, and I think they look nice.
I think the book says something about that the HID lights generate too much heat and they are probably worried they might discolour or whatever. Mine is a GXL with upgraded Phillips blue bulbs and I have had no problems at all. But I also have a home made headlights off and DRL on mod on the GXL so my headlights are only on when I drive in the dark.

They can not be legally used on any headlight that requires a headlight washer system as it makes the washer system not effective. As for them being a "wank", sure, the headlight is stronger, but if the headlight protector gets a stone star in it that stone would of at least put a mark on the lens.......

I'll keep fitting headlight and bonnet protectors to every car I get, after replacing many due to breakages Im sure they work for me. I also had a set on my ZRE152 Corolla Levin ZR with factory fitted HID, just go to spare parts and buy a set for the GXL if you want them.

              Hey digys

Theres nothing wrong with putting protectors on your headlights...even if the polycarbonate headlamp itself is stronger by a factor of 1,000,000 compared to anything else thats irrelevant.

You'll at least save the headlamps from getting damaged by flying stones or other objects.

Couldn't disagree more. Just have a look at all the cars, especially Jap and Korean more than 2 years old, with faded headlights. Many are so dull that I wonder how they see clearly at night. I've had covers on my Prado since new and replaced one due to stone breakage and another from antenna impact when the aerial was mounted on the bull bar wing next to the light. Cheaper to replace cover than to replace the light.

I have recently enquired on headlight protectors for 2020 Prado GXL and was told they are available for GX model only. It maybe due to the halogen vs led lights on GX vs GXL respectively. The headlamps shape looks the same though. I just need to know if I can buy the GX ones and put on the GXL. Has anyone done this yet? Understand the ADR, washer requirements etc. just after the protection.

Any conclusion for @Katulu101's query? Can GX headlight protectors be used on the GXL? Or is
AussieAndy correct "They can not be legally used on any headlight that requires a headlight washer system"?

AussieAndy is correct for on road use you cannot legally fit protectors that prevent the washers from working.

I think the outside shape would be the same for GX and GXL but possibly the profile of the lenses are different. A check would be required. Of course there are legalities as already mentioned.

The covers fit very nicely, 2 tabs insert into the rubber above the headlamp. On the downside, the covers are easily removable, by anyone.
