  • Winch to Bullbar

Hope this is ok here, I couldn't find anywhere else in posts mentioned. I'm struggling to decide on ARB Deluxe bar or the AFN facelift bar, as I'm new to the 4b world, my question is, if I went with the AFN bar, are winches universal meaning they fit all bars or are you limited to certain brands?

    Sludge,
I'm pretty sure they are generic

Im not really happy with the arb bar and how much the wings bounce up and down

Excuse my ignorance, but what are the wings, is that the sides of the bar near front panels?

To some degree yes however you need to take into consideration factors such as the rated winch capacity of the bar (i.e. some are only rated up to 9,500lb and some up to 12,000lb) and the positioning of the clutch handle (i.e. will it foul the bar when turning it?).

Another consideration is positioning of the winch control box (i.e. do you plan to install the box concealed in the bar channel, on top of the channel, or under the bonnet?). Once you know the position of the box make sure the control cables will be long enough to reach the terminals on the winch motor and your battery, it can be expensive to have the cables lengthened or replaced (I know from experience).

Correct, basically the bit that goes round the corner and meets up with your front quarter panels.

            Yes as above.
The top rail above head lights bounces up and down on shit roads and also can see it at night from the spot lights

I've got the AFN bar and a Runva 11XP winch. The solenoid can be made to fit "inside" the bar, to the side of the motor, so you can't see it. It's a bit tight but doable. If you go that route send me a PM and I'll send some photos.

With the clutch handle, you can rotate it to match most bar positions. On the Prado most bars mount the winch on its side, so you will need to rotate the gear compartment cap 90 degrees. Some winches allow 90 degree rotation (45 degree increments), others rotate in 36 degree increments. That's not a biggie, usually.
