  • Ark Pak 730 charge off 2012 150 stock rear 3 pin power socket

    Hi.

    I just nabbed an Ark Pak 730 for 250 bucks.

    Read the good and the bad about this unit but figured it was worth a shot before I started running wires.

    Can I charge the Ark Pak off the stock 3 pin power socket in the back of my 2012 Gx?

    Running a Weaco CFX50 and led etc when stopped.

    Any comments welcome.

    The AC charger is rated to 7A so should be ok.

    Not sure how sensitive the charger is to the Prado's inverter output, so may work, but best to ask the Arkpak engineers if their AC charger is happy to run off modified sine wave inverters.

    Not sure what sort of inverter is in the Prado, but a pure sine wave is the best and modified sine wave is the worst.

        You can charge the arkpak off the 12v port in the rear passenger space as well

          I think that'd be a whole lot better. The AC input specs on the arkpak are 120W which is 20W more than my rear AC outlet is rated for (2016 Kakadu). The arkpak looks to have DC/DC charger in it with a minimum start voltage of 10.5V, so you shouldn't have to worry about voltage boost diodes etc... just plug it into the 12V port and let it do its stuff.

          If you still want to go the AC route, that outlet is definitely a modified sine wave. It switches between +300V and -300V with a pause in between, for a Vrms of 234V, and a frequency of 51.37Hz. Here's how mine looks:

            I suspect that is unloaded.

            What does it look like with just a phone charger or similar plugged in?

              I did load it up with a purely resistive load (a 25W incandescent bulb), but the basic square-wave shape remains the same. The peak-to-peak voltage drops a bit from 616V to 572V and the duty cycle changes a bit to compensate (the on-time fattens). Vrms only drops from 234V to 233V as a result. I think that output shape is pretty standard for cheap modified sinewave inverters.
