  • Fitting Brake Controller

    Hi Everyone,

I've mounted the Tekonsha P3 on the dash and while i had everything apart i've run a nice blue wire from the front the rear towbar. when i got to the towbar i cracked open the trailer plug to find that pin 5 already has a blue wire running to it. i have the genuine toyota toybar installed on the 150. So, have i just run that blue wire in vein and there is somewhere alot closer to the front of the car i could have just run it to - or should i just ignore the fact that there is already a wire there and splice right in?

    hoping someone can help. thanks

    Re: Fitting Brake Controller

If it's anything like the 120 you'll find the end of that elusive blue wire in the jack compartment on the rear left hand side. Not sure if the jack compartment is in the same place on the 150 though? I still had to run a blue wire down to there and i've got a toyota tow bar also.

    Good Luck,
    Mick

I can check tomorrow at work and i'll post it up then. Mine is a 2006 TD, don't know if the colours of the wires differ between the models and years.

Change of plan, i got keen and went and had a look.

I've got 4 wires - Black with orange stripe, green with red stripe, red with blue stripe and green with yellow stripe. My red wire from the brake controller is connected to the green with yellow stripe. I used a multimeter originally to find which one was the right one.

Good Luck, the neighbours probably thought i was trying to hot wire it!

i'm pretty sure mine was purple.. but a quick check with a test light will tell you.

earth off the test light - get the wife to press the pedal and test the wires.

I just fitted a P2 today. The wire to the brake light was green & white at the light. This passed through a connector and was then a thin blue wire. I hooked it up to this inside the jack cavity.

As others have found, the blue brake wire from the 7 pin was loose near the trailer lighting unit in the jack cavity.

                    Cheers.

I've installed my P2 down by the bonnet and fuel filler release on my GX. It fits perfectly and it easily reachable. I used ABR Sidewinders prefab'ed 150 series harness which worked well.

                        Hi Everyone,

I have just ordered our new Prado from the Dealer and it's not expected for delivery until May, but I was wondering where everyone is fitting their brake controllers? The dealer advised not fitting our P3 as the new prado has a drivers knee airbag. They suggest fitting a redarc remote unit to the prado.

Any comment would be great as we have only just bought the p3 about 6 months ago when we ventured into caravanning.

                        Cheers Troy

Dealers seem to have only one way of doing things, a good auto electrician also advised me a Redarc was the only controller he would fit in my 150 for the same reason.
The REDARC is an easier fit but a more basic unit. The knee bag precludes lots of mounting positions. I mounted my P3 in the front cup holder where the bag wont be an issue. Its an easy place to get to.
