  • ARB bullbar with radar cruise control

    Hi all,

Has anyone had an ARB bullbar fitted to a 150 with the Cruise Pack (radar cruise)? ARB say that objects mounted to the front of the car may cause radar cruise control to not function correctly, which sounds pretty non-committal to me. Has anyone actually tried it?

    Many thanks,
    Mazza

I have a 2012 Kakadu with the Radar cruise and ARB Sahara Bar.
The pickup for the Radar cruise is in your windscreen next to your mirror not in the Grill.
The only thing in the grill is the front camera and that has nothing to do with the cruise.
The only time the Cruise does not work is if you have your wipers on flat out. It trips out the cruise control and says it is not available.
      Hope this help mate.

The PCS works a treat also.
Jumped on the Anchors yesterday when a dog jumped out in front of me and I got pinned to the back of my seat.
It makes some pretty crazy noises when its all happening but it does work well.

Isn't the radar in the Toyota emblem in the grill?
The only thing on my windscreen is the sensor for the wiper auto mode

That's actually the emergency brake assist. My GX does that too. It senses when you hit the brake quick and hard and then puts them on even quicker and harder. PITA sometimes as they stay on for a bit after you release the pedal.
The PCS is supposed to automatically advise and then slam the brakes on by itself. I haven't been game to test this, has anyone tried it?

              Richo,

The Radar Cruise and the PCS is only available in the Kakadu and the ZR...

Not on the GX, GXL, Altitude or VX.

The emergency brake assist is different to the PCS (Pre-Collision System).

              Cheers,

              Jeff

Yes I know. My Kakadu has it.
I mentioned my GX as that has EBA but not PCS

Toyota say the radar/PCS is located in the grill. ARB BB can be fitted but spotlights will obstruct the radar. Hence BB is OK but not spotlights. Need to know whether all this stuff can be turned off and stay off if one was to fit spotlights? any commnets are appreciated.

                      Hi Guys,

The PCS in my Kakadu activates when I jump on the brakes and retracts the seatbelt and pulls me back in the seat. I thought this was part of the PCS system? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also re the Radar cruise i was told it was near the mirror on my windscreen by toyota that is why when you have the wipers on at full speed it stops it from working.
At the end of the day there is nothing to worry about by putting a bar and light on the Kakadu as all systems work as intended 100%.
The only thing I had to do was relocate my front camera as that was stuffed with the bar and lights.
I hope this helps answer your question Mazza.

I have the ARB deluxe bullbar with two IPF 900XS lights inside the headlights. I am told the radar emits from the Toyota badge in the centre of the grille. This seems to ring true as since the addition of the bullbar with lights around bends the radar cruise will lose the car in front then as you straighten out in suddenly finds it and decellerates. You can amelriorate this some with the setting of the following distance. Not that big of a deal, had fun seeing what angle it lost the car at one day?!

I have waited for 3 weeks for a response to these questions from Toyota with no success i.e. they are still trying to fgure it out by their own admission. Anway, went out and bought a low km 2011 model Kakadu instead without radar. From all of it, I concluded that the installation of large driving lights was problem for the radar (ARB agreed). Having a bar by itself was no issue.

                            Yeah that's interesting.
As stated before I have the Sahara Bar with Lightforce Genesis HID spots and I travel 80 klm each way to work and back (with cruise on) and I have not had the Radar cruise loose the car in front yet. Maybe its because the spots have a good spacing apart?

Having the same question myself, I tested this conclusively tonight. The radar sensor is definitely in the grill. I covered the Toyota logo with aluminium foil and went for a drive. The radar did not detect vehicles in front, and initially the cruise control would engage and just catch up to the vehicle in front as if it was not there. However, after a few mins it seemed to 'learn' that there was a problem as it eventually displayed the red alert triangle + sounded the chime whilst displaying the message "Clean Radar Sensor" on the multifunction display and from this point the cruise control could not be engaged (set). On power cycling the cruise control it displayed the same message immediately on attempting to set the cruise control. On power cycling the cruise control again and configuring it to non-radar, the cruise control was then able to be set, and behaved normally as a conventional cruise control, as expected. Hope this clears up all the ambiguity above!

I'm not about to test it, but it stands to reason that the PCS would use the same sensor. My Kakaku only has one sensor on the windscreen so I would imagine that's just for the rain sensing wipers. I had assumed that the cruise control disables itself during heavy rain either because the radar sensor cannot be relied upon in such conditions or simply for safety reasons. It's probably fair to say that if the wipers need to be on flat out it's not prudent to be using the cruise control!

So my problem of wanting to fit lights remains. Ctkelleymd can you post a front shot of your vehicle by any chance so as to compare light separation with Ozzygs' vehicle? A bit subjective I know, but how tight did the corners have to be to lose track of the vehicle in front? Presumably it was more vulnerable to losing track of the vehicle in front when cruising at the longer range setting?

                              Cheers,

                              David.
