I had oversized tyres in my Rav4 yet I got it signed and reported to RTA.
can you explain this process?
You need to install tyres first, then find someone who can sign that it is still safe. If speed index is lower than previously you need a sticker on the windscreen. When you have it signd you have to go to RTA so they can update your car's record and endorse your protocol. Then you need to have your protocol in your car all the time when you drive.

Also, with those 15 plastic rivets, you an get them off without a screwdriver, all you do is push the centre pin down (in) and then it will loosen it and you can pull it out. when out, push the centre pin back up and you can put the rivet back in place to hold the plastic cover again. Much easier than the screwdriver.

Not with the ones Ive worked on. The centre is a flat top, needs to be lifted for removal and pressed back down on refit.
yeah, i know there are a heap like that - the ones on the mudflaps are an example, but the ones referred to here will come out easier if you push them in then removed them.
Thanks for the write up and pictures. Seems like a worthwhile mod but I'm a bit confused what to buy. Is it that a prado 150 requires a h11 & a hb3 kit.

Re: Howto: Fit HID's into Factory Headlights (GX/GXL)
Thanks for the instructions.
Just finished this install using 2 x Philips XD288X2 35W 4300K kits, low beam with H11 and high beam with HB3 (9005). Chose the Philips as I want guaranteed reliability, and apparently they are the best. The 4300K is a very comfortable light for night driving and fairly close in colour to halogens, this is what seems to be used for a lot of OEM. They cost $249 per kit shipped to my door. It came with 4000K globes for the parkers and a gift set of Crystal Vision 4300K globes for the fogs, unfortunately H3 and the fogs are H11.
I mounted the ballasts in a similar spot to the pictures which makes for a very neat installation, whole job took under 2 hours.
A couple of points that you left out of your instructions:
1. Need to undo the 4 screws (10mm hex head) under the bumper
2. Also need to undo 2 Phillips head screws on the inside of each mudguard, and one underneath. Take careful note as each screw is a slightly different size.
EDIT: A few improvements:
1. It is better to screw the ballasts straight to the chassis also using the supplied double sided adhesive and not use the supplied mild steel brackets. The brackets have a very flimsy coat of paint and will ultimately rust.
2. Most kits are supplied with untreated self tapping screws which will rust. I got some equivalent sized Galv self tappers from Bunnings
3. The steel that the self tappers screw into is very thin and very malleable, so not good for screwing into. Be careful when tightening as it is easy to strip the thread. The alternative is then to use a small nut and bolt. I only put screws through the top mounting hole.
4. On the Philips Balast it is possible to insert the headlight power feed in 2 directions, that is swap +ve/-ve. Initially I installed it the wrong way and it didn't work. This caused no damage to the ballast or circuits.
You were right about a couple of cracks as you pull the sides of the bumper on and a fairly hard pull is required to release the clip under each head light. I did the job easily on my own. Make sure that you have a blanket or carpet handy to lay the grill and bumper on.
Will need to do the fogs with some 4300K clear vision H11 halogens as they now look completely wrong with the rest of the lights.

Re: Howto: Fit HID's into Factory Headlights (GX/GXL)
Have now road tested the new set-up and I've got to say I am amazed by the result. I was planning to get driving lights, but I may not do it.
The low beam has a very good pattern and clear cut off, due to the colour and pattern there should be no issues with police. I assume that this is the same projector lens that they use with the HID on the VX and Kakadu.
The high beam is pretty impressive due to the size of the standard reflector which looks to be about 100mm in diameter. At a guess they light up with good visiblity for at least 500m.

Philips XD288X2 35W 4300K. It is 35W, I don't think Philips make a 50W kit. If you do some research on the net it seems that a good quality 35W kit will out perform a cheap 50W.
Having seen how bright they are I can't image why anyone would need more power, the key seems to be picking the 4300K colour which provides great penetration.
Re: Howto: Fit HID's into Factory Headlights (GX/GXL)
I was wondering how the HIDs are treating peoples light units? I installed HIDs in my RAV4 and after about a year of use, the plastic that housed it melted a little. I'm thinking of upgrading my Prado's lights too but since my last experience, I'm having second thoughts.

Re: Howto: Fit HID's into Factory Headlights (GX/GXL)
William, the HIDs are far more efficient than Halogen globes. Hence a 35W HID globe outperforms a 100W halogen globe. Being 35W means that they are consuming less power and generating less heat.
I tested this by hand after running the lights for 1/2 hour and the lenses where relatively cool.
I chose the Philips system as it comes with big aluminum cased ballasts, which should last and do not get overly hot. I suspect slim line ballasts will get hotter.
I have also updated my installation posts with a couple of suggested improvements to the installation process.
